CARBURETOR - HOLLEY MODEL 740 (1.9L) - REVISED SERVICE INFORMATION

FORD
1985-86 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY
1985-86 LYNX

The following 1985-1/2-86 Shop Manual/Service Kit instruction revisions should be followed when servicing the Holley model 740 carburetor.

SUPPLEMENTAL CARBURETOR SERVICE INFORMATION

Elimination of the Power Valve

Figure 23 - Carburetor:

For the 1985-1/2-86 model year, the power valve has been eliminated from most calibrations (at the time of publication only the California ATX calibration, 6-08S, has a power valve). A solid brass plug is pressed into the power valve channel to prevent fuel flow. Early production carburetors were built with a gasketed diaphragm and the power valve cover installed (no spring). The diaphragm and cover are no longer being installed on current production carburetors. (See Figure 23)

Fuel Float Level Dry Adjustment

The float level dry adjustment specification is in error in both the service kit instructions and in the 1985-1/2 Shop Manual Supplement. The specification should read 7.50 +/- 0.25 mm (0.295 inches). Also, the dry float level adjustment must be made WITHOUT the airhorn gasket in place.

Figure 24 - Jet Retainer Clips/Bowl Cover Gasket:

Jet Retainer Clips

Jet retainer clips are installed on all 1985 1/2 and 1986 model 740 carburetors. These clips prevent the jets from vibrating loose. (See Figure 24)

IMPORTANT:

1. The jet clips MUST be reinstalled after carburetor servicing, or the jets will eventually vibrate loose.

2. The airhorn gasket MUST be in place on the carburetor main body prior to jet clip installation.

3. Do NOT attempt to use the 1981-83 carburetor tune-up kit (E3PZ-9A586-W) to service the 1985-1/2 and 1986 carburetors.
