Curb Idle
1. Place the transmission in Neutral or Park, and firmly set parking brake.
2. Bring engine to normal operating temperature.
3. Place A/C-Heat selector to the Off position.
4a. Without restarting engine, run at 2000 rpm for more than 10 seconds in Neutral. Return to idle and let engine stabilize for approximately 10 seconds.
Fig. 2 Curb idle speed adjust. 5.0L Engine W/CFI:
4b. Place transmission in Reverse.* Check/adjust curb idle speed within 60 seconds after above engine Neutral idle stabilization (If time limit is exceeded, repeat Steps 4a and 4b). If adjustment is required, loosen saddle bracket locking screw. Then using saddle bracket adjusting screw proceed as follows:
^ If rpm is low, shut off the engine. Turn screw one full turn clockwise. Repeat Step 4a until specified rpm is obtained.
^ If rpm is high, turn screw counterclockwise to specified rpm.
4c. Tighten saddle bracket locking screw and repeat Step 4a to verify final setting.
5. Whenever it is required to adjust engine idle speed by more than 50 rpm, the adjustment screw on the Automatic Overdrive (AOD) linkage lever at the carburetor should also be readjusted.
*NOTE: For vehicles equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes, depression of the normal brakes will result in variations in idle rpm proportional to the amount of pressure applied to the brakes, therefore idle speed should be set with the parking brake only utilized and chocks placed behind the wheels. Placing the selector in Drive will automatically release the parking brake, therefore the transmission should be placed in Reverse with the parking brake firmly set.
