Radio - Revised Removal and Replacement Procedure

RADIO - REVISED REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE - VEHICLES WITH A/C

FORD 1984-85 MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-85 CAPRI

On subject vehicles built after May 3, 1984, the radio removal procedure has been changed with the incorporation of a modified floor air distribution duct using a "break-away attachment" at the back of the duct. To service the radio, use the following procedure.

Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Remove the control knobs, disc, control shaft nuts and washers (1984 models).

3. Remove the two upper mounting screws (1985 models).

4. Remove console assembly (if equipped, refer to Shop Manual Section 45-31).

5. Remove the ash receptacle and bracket (w/o console).

6. Remove the radio rear support attaching screw.

7. In vehicles with premium sound, remove radio support attaching nut and remove ground cable and bracket from radio.

8. Remove the two front attaching screws on the floor air distribution duct, then it is necessary to rotate and pull on the duct to break off the rear "BreakAway Attachment" for duct removal.

9. Disconnect power lead, speaker leads, and antennalead-in-cable from radio receiver.

10. Remove the radio chassis from the instrument panel.

Installation
1. Install the radio chassis in the instrument panel.

2. Install the control knobs, disc, control shaft nuts and washers and tighten (1984 models.)

3. Install the two upper radio mounting screws (1985 models).
4. Install the rear support and attaching screw.

5. In vehicles with premium sound, install radio support attaching nut and attach ground cable and bracket to radio.

6. Install the removed floor air distribution duct by positioning the duct to the evaporator case making sure the retainer at the forward edge of the duct is inserted over the edge of the opening in the evaporator case. Then install the two attaching screws.

7. Install console assembly, if equipped.

8. Install ash receptacle and bracket (w/o console).

9. Connect power, speaker and antenna leads to radio receiver.

10. Connect battery ground cable and check radio for proper operation.
