HESITATION - INTERMITTENT MISS, STALLS (2.3L HSC)

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 TOPAZ (BUILT PRIOR TO MAY 20, 1983)

Vehicles with a short circuit or opening of the fuse link in the engine control sensor wiring harness can be serviced by repositioning the harness (12A581) away from the EGR valve.

Inspection:

1 .Open the engine hood and position the hood prop rod.
2. The electrical components in front of the dash panel are covered with a plastic sight shield. Pull the two push pin (button) fasteners, on top of the shield, upwards about one-half inch, and remove the shield.
3. Inspect for adequate clearance between the engine EGR valve (rear side of engine near center of dash panel) and the 12A581 wiring harness or single wires between the EGR valve and dash. All wires must be at least three-fourths (0.75) inch away from the EGR valve.
4. If the clearance is less than 0.75 inch, service as follows:

Service Procedure:

1. Make sure that none of the wiring connectors are wedged between the 12A581 harness and the dash panel. Reposition connectors forward of the wiring harness, as necessary.

2. There is a flat metal plate (or strap) fastened to the dash panel behind the 12A581 harness. Insert a 384213-S tie strap between the plate and the dash. Position the wiring harness rearward towards the dash, and secure it with the tie strap to ensure 0.75 inch minimum clearance between the EGR valve and the harness main trunk (Figure 10).
3. If any of the 12A581 takeout wires are routed near the EGR valve, position them rearward and fasten to the wiring harness trunk with a 95874-S tie strap.
4. Test and replace, if necessary, the fuse link as outlined in the 1984 Tempo/Topaz Shop Manual 34-30-3.
5. Reposition the sight shield on the component mounting plate and install two push pin fasteners.
