Technical Instructions For Emissions Recall 88E67

MODIFYING THE EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM
NOTE: REFER TO THE ABOVE SCHEMATIC DRAWING AND MATCH THE NUMBERED STEPS WITH THE FOLLOWING NUMBERED STEPS.
Replacing a Vacuum Delay Valve

1. Replace the existing, (#40, red/black), Vacuum Delay Valve (VDV) in the hose at the air control side of the combination air control and air bypass valve with new, (#5 white/black) valve (Part Number E3AZ-12A091-E). Assure that the "black" side of the delay valve is positioned toward the vacuum source.

Installing a Thermactor Idle Vacuum Valve

2. Install a Thermactor Idle Valve (TIV). Find the double 5/32" manifold vacuum fitting below the carburetor in the intake manifold. Follow the hose without the check-valve to where it meets the plastic vacuum harness connector.

3. Cut the hose 2-inches back from the connector and install 3-way vacuum TEE connector (Part Number 383008-S) using the two 3/16" ports. Attach 12-inches of 7/32" vacuum hose, (Part Number D0PZ-12226-C) to the 1/4" port. Connect the open end of the 7/32" hose to the 7/32" port of the TIV, (Part Number D6DZ-9G328-A).

4. Attach 4-inches of 5/32" vacuum hose (Part Number D0PZ-12226-B) to the 5/32" port of the TIV.

Locate the vacuum hose leading to the air bypass side of the combination air control and air bypass valve. Follow the hose past a vacuum TEE to a yellow in-line restrictor with the end capped.

Cut the hose 2-inches back from the restrictor and install a 3-way vacuum TEE connector, (Part Number 373846-S).

Attach the open end of the 5/32" hose from the TIV to the open port of the TEE connector.

Rerouting the TK, TAB and TAD Solenoid Valve Vacuum Lines

5. Remove the existing TEE (3-3/16" ports) from the top port of the TAD solenoid valve and disconnect the plastic black vacuum line and black rubber hose attached to the TEE.

6. Remove the existing 90~ elbow and hose from the bottom port of the TAB solenoid valve.

7. Discard the hose removed in Step #6, and insert the 90~ elbow into the top port of the TAD solenoid valve. Attach the black plastic line to the open end of the elbow.

8. Insert the TEE removed from the TAD solenoid in Step #5, into the bottom port of the TAB solenoid valve.

9. Cut the existing rubber vacuum hose that joins the bottom ports of the TK and TAD solenoid valves. Attach the ends of the cut hose to the TEE inserted into the TAB solenoid valve in Step #8.

Checking for Proper Solenoid Valve Vacuum Line/Hose Routing
10. The bottom ports of the solenoids are linked to the same manifold vacuum source.

11. A blue plastic vacuum line must be attached to the top port of the TK solenoid valve.

12. A black plastic vacuum line must be attached to the top port of the TAD solenoid valve.

13. A pink plastic vacuum line must be attached to the top port of the TAB solenoid valve.

REPLACING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM CATALYST

Replace the existing exhaust system catalyst with new catalyst (Part Number E43Z-5E212-F. Use attaching parts listed in the "Parts Ordering" section of the dealer letter.

Authorized Modifications Decal

PREPARE THE DECAL AS SHOWN. AFFIX THE DECAL TO A FLAT, CLEAN SURFACE ON THE RADIATOR SUPPORT. ORDER THE DECALS ON YOUR WEEKLY STOCK ORDER PAD. (AUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS DECAL, FORM FPS-8262).
VEHICLE EMISSIONS CONTROL INFORMATION (VECI) DECAL

Obtain the decal from the owner and verify that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the decal matches the VIN of the vehicle. Attach the decal over the existing decal on the vehicle.

Decal Part Number for this recall is:
