GLASS - FRONT DOOR - BINDS, RATTLES WHEN DOWN, BREAKS

Door glass binding and rattling when down or breaking may be corrected by replacing the front door glass retainer assembly.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield. (Refer to the 1984 Car Shop Manual, Section 45-03.
2. If the door glass has been shattered remove all broken pieces of glass by vacuum and be sure the door glass run has no broken pieces lodged in the channel. If the door glass has not been shattered or broken run it to full up position.
3. Remove the glass run assembly (21596-7) from front run retainer (21572-3).
4. Remove (2) rivets attaching retainer assembly to door inner panel and remove the front run retainer.
5. Install the new front run retainer assembly (E43Z-5421572-3-B) through the access hole in door inner panel and set the top tab into the door frame at belt.
6. Install the glass run into the new front run retainer.

7. Install (2) rivets (385189-S100) or (2) 1/4" - 20 x 1/2 long screw and washer assemblies through the door inner panel and the upper and lower hole of the front run retainer. Attach a 1/4" x 20 nut and washer (45334-S2) to retain the front run assembly to the door inner panel. Torque screw and washer assemblies to 7 to 12 N-m or 6-11 ft.lbs. (Fig. 12).

8. If the door glass ban been shattered/broken examine the glass bracket window guide inserts (plastic) to check whether or not they have been broken: if so, replace them by removing the nut and washer assemblies attaching the tube run to the door inner panel at belt line and bottom of the door. Remove the tube run and bracket assembly from the window regulator arm roller/slide and remove the run and bracket assembly from the vehicle. (Fig. 13)
9. Remove the (2) rivets that attached tbe glass retainer and spacer to the glass bracket.
CAUTION Prior to removing the center pins from the rivets, support the glass bracket in a vise so that it is not bent during rivet removal. Remove the center pin from each rivet with a drift punch. Then, using a 1/4" drill, drill out the retainer used to retain the door glass.
10. Remove the plastic window guides if broken/cracked (E3FZ-61222A92-A Lower) and/or (E3FZ-6122362-A Upper) from the glass bracket as required and replace with new parts.
11. Reinstall the tube run into tbe glass bracket and install both parts as an assembly into the door. (It may be necessary to remove the stabilizer at at the belt line to do this).
12. Loosely install the upper and lower nut and washer assemblies into the tube run and door inner panel (also stabilizer-22336) at door belt.
13. Install the regulator arm roller guide into the glass bracket "C" channel.
14. Snap the plastic retainer and spacer (removed in Step #9 above) into the new door glass and install the glass into the door through the door belt.
Note: Assure that the metal washer within the plastic retainer assembly is on the outboard side of glass.
15. Position glass to-glass bracket and Install (2) rivets (385232- S100) to secure glass to glass bracket.
16. Raise tbe glass approximately 3/4" up and pull the glass back into the "B" pillar glass run. Set stabilizer. (22336) to glass and tighten screw.
17. Tighten the upper and lower nut and washer assemblies attaching tbe tube run to the inner panel. Torque to 7-11 N-m (5-8 ft.lbs.) torque.
18. Cycle the door glass to assure smooth cycle.
19. Reinstall door water shield and trim panel.
