Engine Oil Control Plug - Revised Service Procedure

86ford22 Article No. 86-4-11
OIL CONTROL PLUG - 2.0L DIESEL
- ENGINES BUILT AFTER 4/1/85 - REVISED SERVICE PROCEDURE

FORD 1984-85 ESCORT, TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-85 LYNX, TOPAZ

Figure 23:

An oil control plug was incorporated on production engines built after April 1, 1985, to relieve any high oil pressure that may exist at the head gasket area during cold engine start-up. The control plug is pressed into the oil feed hole located at the left upper front surface of the engine block (Figure 23) and seals to the head assembly with use of an O-ring seal that is retained in the top of the plug.
The following procedure should be included in Section 22-06-22 of the 1985 Car Shop Manual, Volume E, when servicing the cylinder block or head assembly.

5A. "On engine blocks equipped with an oil control plug located in the oil feed hole, replace the oil control plug O-ring seal. Apply a light coating of engine oil to the O-ring and when installing the cylinder head, be careful not to damage the seal."
THE CONTROL PLUG IS NOT TO BE USED ON ENGINES BUILT PRIOR TO APRIL 1, 1985. THE OIL PASSAGE HOLE IN THE HEAD IS OFFSET FROM THE PASSAGE IN THE CYLINDER BLOCK ON THESE ENGINES. IF A CONTROL PLUG IS USED, OIL FLOW TO THE CYLINDER HEAD WILL BE CUT OFF FROM CYLINDER HEAD COMPONENTS.

Engines built after April 1, 1985 are assembled with an oil control plug. THE SERVICE REPLACEMENT PLUGS ARE ONLY TO BE USED ON THESE ENGINES. Refer to the engine code decal located on the camshaft cover for the engine build date.

Twelve different sized oil control plugs are released covering a range of diameters in increments of .03 mm and are color coded for identification. The O-ring seal is included with the oil control plug. (See Parts List)

1. Insert a black colored plug (E53Z-6024-B) into the oil feed hole at the cylinder block.

2. If the black plug is loose in the hole, remove and insert a purple plug (E53Z-6024-C).

3. Repeat the above procedure using the next larger plug until it fits the hole snugly.

4. Remove the plug that fits snugly and insert a plug that is two sizes larger. Lightly tap the plug into the cylinder using a soft faced mallet.

EXAMPLE:
If a brown plug (E53Z-6024-D) fits snugly, use a green plug (E53Z-6024-F).

5. Measure the amount of plug projection from the surface of the cylinder block. Insure that it measures 5.1 +/- 0.2 mm.

6. The O-ring is on the plug as received. Ensure that the O-ring is attached properly and apply engine oil to the plug and O-ring. This will prevent O-ring damage when the plug is inserted into the oil feed hole of the cylinder head.
