Engine Induction System - High Noise Level
Article No. 85-12-13ENGINE INDUCTION SYSTEM HIGH NOISE LEVEL - 2.0L DIESEL ENGINE
FORD 1984 ESCORT
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 LYNX
Some early production diesel engines (built between September 1983 and December 1983) may exhibit a high noise level because they were built without an air cleaner resonator assembly.
Engines equipped with an air intake tube assembly instead of an air cleaner resonator exhibit an objectionable engine induction noise, audible in the passenger compartment during normal engine operation.
1. Remove the air cleaner cover and position the cover and outlet tube to one side.
2. Remove the three bolts holding the air cleaner tray to the fender apron and remove the tray.
Figure 10 - AIR CLEANER RESONATOR ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION - 2.0L DIESEL ENGINE:
3. Remove the air intake tube assembly (9C675) and replace with air cleaner resonator assembly (9F763). Check to ensure gasket is positioned properly in air cleaner (see Figure 10). Torque retaining nuts 35-60 in.lbs.
4. Reinstall the air cleaner tray (tighten bolts to 1.5- 6.0 ft.lbs. torque) and the air cleaner cover and outlet tube.
NOTE: Ensure that four spring clamps (part number 9F716) and one over center clamp (part number 9628) are installed in their proper places. (Over center clamp should be installed under outlet tube of air cleaner assembly.)
Authorized Modifications Decal:
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
