Oil Pan: Service and Repair
With EEC
Removal
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
2. Disconnect the accelerator and kickdown rods at the carburetor.
3. Remove the accelerator mounting bracket retaining bolts and remove the bracket.
4. Remove EGR valve and cooler.
5. Remove the fan shroud retaining bolts and position the shroud over the fan.
8. Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector from the wiring harness.
7. Remove the wiper motor.
8. Disconnect the windshield washer hose.
9. Remove the wiper motor mounting cover.
10. Remove the dipstick.
11. Remove the dipstick retaining bolt at the exhaust manifold.
12. Remove the thermactor air dump tube retaining clamp.
13. Remove the thermactor crossover tube at the rear of the engine.
14. Raise the vehicle.
15. Drain the crankcase.
16. Remove filler tube from oil pan and drain transmission.
17. Disconnect cable from starter motor.
18. Remove starter motor.
19. Disconnect the fuel line at the fuel pump. Vehicles equipped with central fuel Injection hay. a high pressure electric fuel pump. Pressure must be relieved at the Schrader type valve on the fuel charging assembly before disconnecting fuel supply and return line.
20. Disconnect the inlet pipes from the exhaust manifold.
21. Remove the exhaust gas oxygen sensor from the exhaust manifold.
22. Remove the thermactor secondary air tube to torque converter housing clamps.
23. Remove the converter inspection cover.
24. Disconnect the exhaust pipes to catalytic converter outlet.
25. Remove the catalytic converter secondary air tube and inlet pipes to exhaust manifold.
26. Loosen the engine rear mount attaching nuts.
27. Remove the engine mount through bolts.
28. Remove the shift crossover bolts at the transmission.
29. Remove the brake line retainer from the front crossmember.
30. Disconnect the transmission kickdown rod.
31. Position a jack under the engine and raise the engine as high as it will go.
32. Place a block of wood between each engine mount and the chassis brackets. When the engine is definitely secured with the wood blocks, remove the jack.
33. Disconnect low oil level sensor on left side of rear oil sump, if so equipped.
34. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts and lower the oil pan.
35. Remove the three bolts retaining the oil pump pick up tube and screen assembly to the oil pump and cylinder block. Allow the pick up tube assembly to drop Into the oil pan.
36. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
37. Clean the oil pan and inspect for damage.
38. Remove and clean the oil pump pickup tube and screen assembly.
39. Clean the oil pan gasket surface on the cylinder block.
Inatallatlon
1. Install oil filter.
2. Position oil pan gaskets and seals on the cylinder block.
3. Place the oil pick up tube and screen assembly in the oil pan and position the oil pan onto the No.2 crossmember.
4. Position the oil pick up tube and screen assembly and install the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 14-20 Nm (10-15 lb-ft).
5. Position the oil pan and install the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 12-15 Nm (9-11 lb-ft).
6. Connect low oil level sensor wire on left side of rear oil sump, if so equipped.
7. Position a jack under the engine and rai8e the engine enough to remove the wooden blocks.
8. Lower the engine and remove the jack.
9. Install the engine support to chassis through bolts and nuts.
10. Connect the fuel line to the fuel pump. Connect fuel supply and return lines on vehicles equipped with central fuel injection.
11. Install the converter inspection cover on the torque converter housing.
12. Tighten the rear mount attaching nuts.
13. Connect the kickdown rod at the transmission lever.
14. Install the shift crossover.
15. Position the catalytic converters, secondary air tube and inlet pipes to the exhaust manifold and install retaining nuts.
16. Install catalytic converter outlet attaching bolts.
17. Install the torque converter inspection cover.
18. Install the secondary air tubes on the converter housing.
19. Position the starter and install the retaining bolts.
20. Connect the cable to the starter.
21. Install the transmission dipstick tube.
22. Install the exhaust gas oxygen sensor.
23. Lower the vehicle.
24. Install the dipstick.
25. Install thermactor air dump valve to exhaust manifold clamp.
26. Connect the windshield wiper hose.
27. Install windshield wiper motor mounting plate.
28. Install windshield wiper motor.
29. Connect kickdown rod to carburetor lever.
30. Position accelerator cable mounting bracket and install attaching screws.
31. Position shroud and install retaining bolts.
32. Install thermactor air tube to rear of engine.
33. Install air cleaner assembly.
34. Fill crankcase with oil.
35. Fill transmission with transmission fluid.
36. Start engine and cycle transmission.
37. Check for leaks at the oil pan and transmission.
