Oil Pan: Service and Repair
1983-88 COUGAR & THUNDERBIRD & 1984-86 LTD & MARQUIS V8-302
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove oil level indicator from left side of rear oil sump.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over fan.
5. Raise and support vehicle.
6. Drain engine oil and transmission fluid.
7. Disconnect driveshaft, then remove speedometer cable from transmission.
8. Remove transmission shift linkage lever from transmission.
9. Remove flywheel housing cover attaching bolts and the cover.
10. Remove flywheel-to-converter attaching bolts, then the transmission kickdown control shaft.
11. Remove gear selector valve rod, then the starter motor.
12. Remove catalytic converter and muffler inlet pipes.
13. Support transmission with a suitable jack and remove converter housing-to-cylinder block attaching bolts.
14. Remove No. 3 crossmember and rear insulator support assemblies.
15. Disconnect neutral start switch electrical connector from transmission.
16. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines, then lower transmission and converter assembly from vehicle.
17. Remove flywheel attaching bolts, then the engine rear cover plate.
18. Remove steering gear attaching bolts and position gear aside.
19. Raise engine sufficiently to provide clearance for oil pan removal.
20. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and the oil pan.
21. Reverse procedure to install.
