This notice is sent to you by the Ford Motor Company because we want the emission control systems on all of our products to work properly. We have found that some 1984-model year Thunderbird, Cougar, LTD and Marquis vehicles which have the 3.8L engine and automatic transmission may require modification to help assure acceptable levels of exhaust control and to improve fuel economy. Our records indicate that you own one of these vehicles which is identified by the serial number shown on the enclosed form.
DESCRIPTION OF CONDITION:
Your vehicle may have been manufactured with an incorrect exhaust air supply control valve. The valve controls the supply of air that is injected into the exhaust system and affects the proper mixture of air and fuel.
SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:
Ford is voluntarily recalling your vehicle to inspect and, if necessary, replace the exhaust air supply control valve. This service will be performed at no charge to you.
IF YOU NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE:
Please remove the prepaid return postcard from the enclosed form (identified as FCS 1864). Complete Section 1, and return it to us. This information is needed to update our records.
^ Contact the nearest Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership in your area immediately to make a service appointment. The time needed to perform the repair is approximately one-half hour. Dealerships have service and Parts ordering instruction.
^ Present the Form 1864 to your dealership when you take your vehicle in for service. The form authorizes him to perform this service. After repairing your vehicle, the dealership will return the form to us verifying that the required service has been performed. If you lose the Form 1864, the dealership will still service your vehicle at no charge to you.
IF THE DEALERSHIP FAILS TO PERFORM THE SERVICE ON A TIMELY BASIS AND WITHOUT CHARGE:
If you have difficulties in having this recall service performed, please complete Section 3 of the prepaid return postcard and mail it to us, or you may wish to contact the nearest Ford Parts and Service Division District Office whose address is shown in your Owner Guide. Any Ford or LincolnMercury dealership can also furnish you the address.
We regret any inconvenience this recall may cause you. We urge you to have this service performed in order to help assure proper operation of your vehicle and full protection under the emission warranty applicable to your vehicle. Failure to do so could reduce your vehicle's ability to comply with any mandated inspection/maintenance test requirements.
