AIR CONDITIONING - COMPRESSOR MOAN AND PUMPING NOISE - WITH 3.8L ENGINE AND FS6 COMPRESSOR
FORD 1983 LTD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 MARQUIS
A/C moan at approximately 1100 engine RPM and an A/C compressor pumping noise at any engine speed may be caused by the engine accessory drive components and the A/C compressor discharge pulsations which are transmitted through the refrigerant system components. To service this condition, install a new
clutch damper pulley, compressor discharge hose and muffler assembly, using the following procedure.
1. Discharge the refrigerant system, observing all safety precautions (Shop Manual Section 36-32).
2. Disconnect the discharge hose from the compressor and condenser, and remove the hose from the vehicle.
3. Install a new discharge hose and muffler assembly (Part Number E3DZ-19972-E). Lubricate the Orings with clean refrigerant oil prior to installation.
4. Remove and discard the clip attaching the suction line to the dash panel, and position the suction line away from contacting the dash panel.
5. Loosen the compressor drive belt tension and remove the belt from the clutch pulley.
6. Remove the hub and pulley from the compressor (Shop Manual section 36-37).
7. Install a new damper-type clutch pulley (Part Number E3DZ-2E884-A) and the original clutch
hub, as outlined in Section 36-37 of the Shop Manual.
Figure 1 - Article No. 85-1-2:
8. Use a dial indicator as follows to adjust the clutch air gap:
a. Mount the dial indicator and position the contact point against the surface of the hub plate (Figure 1).
b. Energize the clutch and zero the dial indicator.
c. De-energize the clutch and read the air gap on the dial indicator. The air gap should be between 0.021 inches and 0.036 inches. If the air gap is greater than or less than 0.021 to 0.036 inches, add or remove shims as necessary to obtain an air gap between the specified dimensions as outlined in Section 36-37.
d. After the specified air gap is obtained, remove the dial indicator.
9. Remove the drive belt idler tensioner pulley.
10. Install the drive belt. Then, install the idler belt tensioner and adjust the drive belt to the specified tension.
11. Make a cut-out in the hood insulation blanket above the clutch pulley to provide sufficient clearance for the pulley when the hood is closed.
12. Leak test, evacuate and charge the system (Shop Manual Section 36-37). Then, check the system for proper operation and assure the condition has been corrected.
