TFI Module - Engine Cranks But Won't Start

83ford21 Article No. 83-4-7

NO START, CRANKS (1.6L) - ALL WITH E.F.I. (ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION)

FORD 1983 ESCORT, EXP WITH EFI (ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION)

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 LYNX, LN7 WITH EFI (ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION)

If the engine cranks but does not start, check for a loose connection at the engine distributor wiring connector.
This concern can occur on vehicles built prior to November 29, 1982. The connector retaining tabs on these vehicles may not seat fully, due to an excessive amount of grease inserted into the distributor TFI module cavity.

1. Inspect the engine wiring harness connection at the distributor.
2. Be sure the connector is fully seated in the cavity of the TFI module and the retaining tabs are properly latched.

Figure 4:

3. Secure the connector to the TFI module with an adjustable bundling strap (Figure 4).
