Rear Window - Water Leaks

83ford20 Aricle No. 83-6-3

LEAKS, WATER - REAR WINDOW SEALING

FORD 1983-1/2 THUNDERBIRD

Water leaks in the back window area may be caused by urethane sealer adhesion voids to the glass or the metal flange area. This condition may have been caused by excessive glass movement during installation to the body at assembly.

An indication of the leak condition is a moisture condensation band at the bottom of the back window, a moist package tray pad, or water in the trunk area.

To service a back window water leak condition:
^ Add water to the perimeter of the back window moulding area while applying compressed air around the perimeter of the glass from inside of the vehicle. Air bubbles will appear at any adhesion voids.
^ If a leak is found, remove the rear window moulding as outlined in the Shop Manual, Section 43-11-1.
^ Seal the leak area with a silicone sealer (Part No. D6AZ-19562-A) and recheck the window perimeter with the air/water test procedure before reinstalling window mouldings.
^ Reinstall mouldings after back window has been thoroughly sealed.

All units built prior to March 1, 1983, must be checked during pre-delivery to determine if any water leaks are present in the back window area.
