Fuel Tank - Overfilling Prevention

"FUEL SPIT-BACK" - OVERFILL OF FUEL TANK
FORD 1978-84 ALL PASSENGER CARS
The fuel tank is designed to hold a specific amount of fuel. There is also an air space within the tank to accommodate possible fuel expansion. To avoid overfilling the tank, it is recommended that the amount of fuel put into the tank when filling be limited to three (3) automatic pump shut-offs.
1. Insert the fuel dispensing nozzle into the filler pipe as far as possible.
2. Dispense fuel at the minimum rate possible without fuel spillage until the nozzle shuts off.
3. Wait five (5) seconds. Dispense at about one-half the previous rate until the nozzle shuts off.
4. Repeat step 3, once more, and the tank should be full.
