DIESEL FUEL TANK SENDING UNIT:

SENDING UNIT - Device in the fuel tank which monitors the amount of fuel in the tank and relays the information to the fuel gauge on the instrument panel. Device also contains the components which take fuel from the tank and routes it to the fuel line.
