1983, 1984 Lincoln Town Car, 1983 Mark VI -4 Door Carriage Roof

FIGURE 15:




1. Remove rear belt moulding, (1) nut each side, inside luggage compartment and pry moulding up to disengage push-in retainers. (Figure 15).

2. Remove right and left (side) belt mouldings. Pry moulding away from vehicle and slide off end retain at "C" pillar (Figure 15).

3. Remove right and left belt moulding end retainer at "C" pillar (1) screw each (Figure 15).

4. Remove drip rail moulding from right and left roof rail (5) screws each.

5. Bend bonnet assembly retaining brackets at roof rails downward.
6. Peel top cover upward to obtain clearance for removal of bonnet assembly along the belt moulding area. Drill out, retaining pop rivets using 1/8" drill and adjustable stop set at 1/2" (Figure 15).

7. Lift bonnet assembly (2) men upward approximately 12" push forward to disengage from front retainers and remove bonnet assembly. (Figure 16).

8. Remove foam tape from bonnet to vehicle mating surfaces.

9. Apply zinc rich primer to all attachment locations, covering all bare metal.

10. Apply foam tape to mating surfaces - bonnet assembly to vehicle.
11. Reposition bonnet assembly to vehicle roof engaging (3) front retainers, and align bonnet assembly to vehicle roof. Apply sealer to all attaching holes and install pop rivets to retain, 1/8" x .328", along the belt line and up the "C" pillar as installed during manufacturing. Use flat head rivets and grind flush with fiberglass cap to insure rivets do not read through material. (Figure 16).
12. Apply Ford adhesive (D9AZ-19C525-A) or equivalent where top material was peeled back. Secure material to bonnet assembly. Smooth out all wrinkles, puckers or draws.

13. Reposition bonnet assembly retaining brackets to roof side rails.

14. Install right and left drip rail mouldings, (5) screws each side.

15. Install right and left belt moulding end retainers, (1) screw each, install the right and left belt mouldings, (replace all damaged barrel nuts and apply sealer to all attaching locations). (Figure 15).

16. Install rear belt moulding (1) nut each side, inside luggage compartment, (replace all damaged barrel nuts and apply sealer to all attaching locations). (Figure 15).
ADDITIONAL STEP FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH MOON ROOF

1. Remove moon roof glass panel assembly. Use Car Shop Manual procedure Section 46-05.

2. Remove weatherseal from around roof opening.

3. Unwrap top covering material from roof opening edge.

4. Apply Ford adhesive (D9AZ-19C525-A) or equivalent, wrap roof cover material around edge of roof opening securing material. Smooth out all wrinkles, puckers or draws.

5. Install weatherseal around roof opening using Ford adhesive (D9AZ-19C525-A) or equivalent.

6. Install moon roof glass panel assembly.

BACKLITE REPLACEMENT

1. Remove (6) screws retaining backlite interior garnish moulding, unsnap moulding and remove moulding.

2. Remove rear belt moulding, (1) nut each side, inside luggage compartment and pry moulding up to disengage push-in retainers. (Figure 15).
3. Remove right and left (side) belt mouldings. Pry moulding away from vehicle and slide off end retainer at "C" pillar.

4. Remove right and left belt moulding, end retainer at "C" pillar (1) screw each.

5. Remove drip rail moulding from right and left roof rail (5) screws each.

6. Bend bonnet assembly retaining brackets at roof rails downward.

7. Peel top cover upward to obtain clearance for removal of bonnet assembly along the belt moulding area. Drill out, retaining pop rivets using 1/8" drill and adjustable stop set at 1/2". (Figure 15).
8. Lift bonnet assembly, (2) men, upward approximately 12 inches and prop bonnet assembly.

CAUTION: Bonnet assembly is secured to vehicle top with adhesive and deadener - excessive pressure when lifting bonnet assembly may fracture fiberglass cap.

9. Disconnect heated backlite leads. (1) each side.

10. Replace the backlite glass as outlined in the Car Shop Manual in Section 43-11 Glass - Stationary
- Butyl Type Seal.

11. Connect heated backlite leads, (1) each side.

12. Remove foam tape from bonnet to vehicle mating surfaces.

13. Apply zinc rich primer to all attachment locations, covering all bare metal.

14. Apply foam tape to mating surfaces - bonnet assembly to vehicle.

15. Reposition bonnet assembly to vehicle roof engaging (3) front retainers, Figure 16, and align bonnet assembly to vehicle roof. Apply sealer to all attaching holes and install pop rivets to retain, 1/8" x .328, along the belt line and up the "C" pillar as installed during manufacturing. (Use flat head rivets and grind flush with fiberglass cap to insure rivets do not read through material.
16. Apply Ford adhesive (D9AZ-19C525-A) or equivalent where top material was peeled back. Secure material to bonnet assembly smoothing out all wrinkles, puckers or draws.

17. Reposition bonnet assembly retaining brackets to roof side rails.

18. Install right and left drip rail mouldings. (5) screws each side.

19. Install right and left belt moulding end retainers, (1) screw each, install the right and left belt mouldings, (replace all damaged barrel nuts and apply sealer to all attaching locations. (Figure 15).
20. Install rear belt moulding, (1) nut each side, inside luggage compartment, (replace all damaged barrel nuts and apply sealer to all attaching locations.).

ADDITIONAL STEP FOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH MOON ROOF

The following steps must be taken prior to removal of bonnet assembly.

1. Remove glass panel assembly. Use Car Shop Manual procedure Section 46-05.

2. Remove weatherseal from around roof opening.

3. Unwrap top covering material from roof opening edge.

4. Apply Ford Adhesive (D9AZ-19C525-A) or equivalent, wrap roof cover material around edge of roof opening securing material, smooth out all wrinkles, puckers or draws.

5. Install weatherseal around roof opening using Ford adhesive (D9AZ-19C525-A) or equivalent.

6. Install glass panel assembly.

BELT MOULDING - REMOVE AND INSTALL

1. Remove rear belt moulding, (1) nut each side, inside luggage compartment and pry moulding up to disengage push-in retainers. (Figure 15).
2. Remove right and left (side) belt mouldings, Pry mouldings away from vehicle and slide off end retain at "C" pillar.
3. Remove right and left belt moulding end retainers at "C" pillar, (1) screw each.

4. Apply zinc rich primer to all attachment locations, covering all bare metal.

5. Install right and left belt moulding end retainers, (1) screw each. Install the right and left belt mouldings, (Replace all damaged barrel nuts and apply sealer to all attaching locations).

6. Install rear belt moulding, (1) nut each side, inside luggage compartment, (replace all damaged barrel nuts and apply sealer to all attaching locations.)

BOW FEATURE STRIP - REMOVE AND INSTALL

1. Remove (2) bow feature strip end caps (1) screw each. (Figure 15).
2. Slide feature strip off retainer by pulling to the right or left out of the retainer.
3. Remove bow feature strip retainer. Drill out (6) retaining rivets, slide a flat tool under retainer and deflect upward.

4. Remove adhesive from roof material using a cloth or rag dampened with solvent (Dietzler No. 440) or equivalent - grease and wax remover.

5. Seal used rivet holes in top.

6. Mark old rivet hole pattern on the top of new retainer, then position new retainer to top, (old rivet holes in top are now covered).

7. Drill (6) new holes in bow retainer and top that do not intercept old rivet holes. Use 1/8" drill with adjustable stop set to 1/2" depth and install (6) rivets to retain.

8. Slide bow feature strip on to retainer and across roof.

9. Trim bow feature strip and install (2) end caps (1) screw each.
