TRANSMISSION - MANUAL - T-5 OVERDRIVE - SHIFT LEVER PIVOT PIN BEING MISTAKENLY REMOVED AS THE OIL FILL PLUG

FORD 1983-1/2 MUSTANG/T-BIRD 2.3L EFI-TC OR 5.0L ENGINE

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-1/2 CAPRI 5.0L ENGINE

Removal of the incorrect bolt/plug to check or fill transmission can cause the fifth/reverse shift lever to drop internally.

Do not remove the hex headed bolt above the back-up light switch to check fluid level. This is not a fill plug, but the shift lever pivot pin that secures the fifth/reverse shift lever. Removal of this pin will allow the fifth/reverse shift lever to drop from its location inside the transmission, resulting in a transmission removal for necessary services.

To check or add transmission fluid in the subject transmissions, remove the top plug on the right-hand side of the transmission. Transmission fluid level should be to the bottom of the fill plug hole.
