Vehicles which exhibit engine shift flare/over speed or slow return to idle when shifting gears can be serviced by adjusting the throttle solenoid positioner (TSP).
1. Remove Air Cleaner Assembly.
2. Open throttle (block open) and remove plastic pad (#1 on view) from the dashpot shaft. Pull off by hand.
3. Remove spring #2.
4. Remove "C" clip #3, (large) next to spring cup seat, seat #4, and fiber washer #5. CAUTION: ROTATE THE CLIP AND REMOVE IN A DOWNWARD MOTION TO HELP PREVENT ITS LOSS.
5. Remove dashpot assembly #7. Carefully roll back rubber boot/seal #6 when removing.
Figure 19:
6. Mark a reference line with a pen on both the dashpot can and large diameter of the plunger assembly (Figure 19).
7. Carefully grip the large diameter of the plunger with pliers and rotate the dashpot can counterclockwise 5 complete turns (Figure 19).
8. Apply Loctite 242, Part Number E0AZ-19554-A to the upper 3 exposed threads (Figure 19).
9. Holding the large diameter of the plunger assembly, turn the dashpot can clockwise 2 complete turns.
10. Install dashpot assembly. Be sure it's clean of any dirt or grease. Reinstall fiber washer, spring seat, and "C" clip. Reinstall rubber boot/seal. Be sure the seal is seated completely; if not, corrosion to the armature may occur.
11. Reinstall spring and press on the plastic pad. Keep the pad level while applying hand pressure. The pad will snap into place when seated. Unblock the throttle; the assembly is now complete.
12. Warm the engine, check/reset the curb idle speed to the specification on the engine decal.
13. Reinstall air cleaner.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
