Customers who may have relocated and/or continually operate the subject vehicles in high altitudes (above 4,000 ft. alt.) may have the following procedures performed to improve performance:
1. Locate the MCU connector harness.
2. Two wires will be extending about 4-6 inches from the back of the MCU connector harness that are unterminated with their ends taped. On Mustang, Capri, Fairmont and Zephyr, one wire is green with a green stripe and the other is black with a green dot. On Granada and Cougar, one wire is black and the other is blue. Gently pull the taped ends out of the harness bundle.
3. Remove tapes and bare wire by removing 1/4 inch of insulation from each wire.
4. Splice wires together and solder. Make sure solder connection is secure and is not a cold solder joint.
5. Using electrical tape, wrap the soldered connection and secure the connected wires to the harness. Rewrap the harness as necessary.
6. Obtain a Vehicle Emission Control Information Update Label (available at all Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealers) and fill in the appropriate information as indicated on page 2 and install.
It should be noted that the effect of this procedure on the "self-test" feature will be to produce a service code 65 when the test is run. This service code should appear if the vehicle is being tested at an altitude greater than 3600 feet. It is a "pass-test" indicator indicating pin 18 (altitude) is going to ground, the results of the above procedure.
To return the vehicle to continuous service below 4,000 ft., reverse the above procedure.
