A/T - ATX Service Procedure revision

83ford16 Article No. 83-9-4

AXLE - TRANSAXLE - ATX - INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT RELEASE OF FINAL GEAR SET

FORD 1981-83 ESCORT/EXP

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1981-83 LYNX/LN7

This article releases a revised service procedure and parts availability to be used when servicing the final drive gear set.

The final drive matched gear set (7F420) has been revised to release the gears individually. The input gear (7F342), idler gear and bearing assembly (7F475), and output gear (7F343), may be serviced separately. Each gear as released will service all current and past model applications. However, the final drive input gear will incorporate the use of a spacer for all 1.6L, 1.6L H.O. and 1.6L EFI units that contain the 25/32" long (7F403) input gear bearing as opposed to the currently released 27/32" long (7F403). It will be necessary to measure the bearing length to determine if the spacer is required for models built prior to 3-31-83.

With the case turned 90~ so pump side is facing up, install the spacer as follows:

1. Install thrust (needle) bearing #1 on reactor support.
2. Install cage needle bearing on reactor support.
3. Install spacer on reactor support.
4. Install input gear over spacer and cage bearing.

NOTE: For 1983-1/2 2.3L applications, the spacer is not required.
