Customer concerns regarding cold starts and driveaways at altitude (above 4,000 ft.) with sea level calibration, may be serviced by employing the following modifications to the choke system:
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly and set aside.
2. Remove the thermostatic housing (choke cap) as per the 1 981 Powertrain Escort/Lynx - Part 24-05-7.
3. Remove the choke index plate.
Figure 8:
Figure 11:
4. Determine if the carburetor is equipped with a "C,, spring (Figure 8). If the carburetor has a "C" spring, install the new choke index plate (E1PZ-9A539-J): proceed to Note. If the carburetor does not have a "C" spring, install a new choke index plate (E1PZ9A539-H) (Figure 11).
NOTE:
On "C" spring equipped carburetors, the choke breather angle must be checked and adjusted. The choke breather angle is not normally checked and/or adjusted. The breather angle is not to be confused with choke pulldown, de-choke, or cam set; but is a separate choke function that applies to "C" spring equipped carburetors only.
Breather Angle Procedure:
a. Place the throttle on high cam position.
Figure 9:
b. Close the choke plates by hand and secure closed with a small strong rubber band (Figure 9).
C. Manually open the choke plates to overcome the amount of light closing pressure, do not open choke plate to the point where the bimetal lever begins to move. Proceed to Step "D".
Figure 10:
d. Measure the distance between the downward side of the primary choke plate to the air horn wall. This distance is known as breather angle, the specification is 1.8 mm (# 50 drill .070 + .001) (Figure 10).
e. Rotating the index plate clockwise will increase breather angle distance. This may necessitate removing small amounts from the index plate choke housing locking tab (Figure 11). This will allow the index plate to rotate in either the clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to gain the necessary travel to allow the specified breather angle clearance.
5. Install the new thermostatic housing (choke cap) E2PZ-9848-D, and attaching hardware as per the 1981 Powertrain, Escort/Lynx - Part 24-05-11.
NOTE:
On all ATX applications - the cold choke delay system must be removed. This can be accomplished by attaching the main wiring harness choke connection directly to the choke cap and connect the two (2) overlay connections (1 male - 1 female) together.
6. Install the air cleaner assembly.
7. Obtain a Vehicle Emission Control Information Update Label (available at all Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealers) and fill in the appropriate information as shown and install.
The customer should be advised that the cold start performance may require opening the throttle after engine begins firing to assist starting.
Figure 12:
8. To revert back to sea level calibration, see Figure 12 for original components list. Install original choke index plate and choke cap. Reattach cold choke delay system (on ATX applications).
