Subject:
1.6L ENGINE - MODIFICATION OF SEA LEVEL CALIBRATIONS FOR ALTITUDE APPLICATIONS

Model:
1981-1982 ESCORT/EXP VEHICLES WITH 1.6L ENGINE AND MTX/ATX TRANSMISSIONS
1981-1982 LYNX/LN7 VEHICLES WITH 1 .6L ENGINE AND MTX/ATX TRANSMISSIONS

WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINES. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINES IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

Customers who may have relocated and/or continually operate the subject vehicles in high altitudes (above 4000 ft. alt.) may have the following procedure performed to improve performance or correct carburetor loading:

All Manual Transmissions (Use Air Bleed Kit No. E1PZ-9D544-P):

1. Remove air cleaner assembly and set aside.

2. Remove the air cleaner bail retaining pin by using a pliers with a firm grip to disengage light pin press.

3. Remove air cleaner bail and stud as an assembly.

4. Unscrew the primary and secondary high speed air bleed, main well tube and main jet assembly (Figure 1).

5. Using a thin needle nose pliers, carefully lift the assemblies out of the carburetor, carefully identify primary from secondary.

6. The high speed air bleeds, main well tubes and main jets are press fit assemblies and can be taken apart by hand (Figure 2).

7. Replace the primary high speed air bleed, stamped 160, with a 185.

8. Replace the secondary high speed air bleed, stamped 220, with a 240.

9. Add one small drop of Loctite 262 or equivalent to the lower threads (Figure 2) and install both primary and secondary assemblies into their appropriate locations. Torque to 2.0 Newton meters (17 in-lbs).

10. Install air cleaner bail, stud and retaining pin.

11. Check and reset, if necessary, all idle speeds.

NOTE:
Whenever it is required to increase Idle speed by more than 100 rpm, or for any decrease in idle speed, the automatic transmission throttle linkage must be readjusted.

12. Install the air cleaner assembly.

13. Install a Vehicle Emission Control Information Update Label.
