The dashpot--Fig 12--is mounted on the carburetor and aids in controlling hydrocarbon emissions by slowing the closing of the throttle plates. As the throttle is opened, a spring extends the dashpot plunger. As the throttle plates close, the throttle lever applies pressure to the dashpot plunger. This causes the air in the dashpot chamber to leak out slowly, allowing the throttle plates to return slowly to the idle position.
