Engine - Stall/No Start Condition in Cold Regions

Bulletin No. 81-20

Article No. 81-20-11

Date: October 5, 1981

SUBJECT:
STALL AND/OR NO START CONDITION WITH VEHICLES OPERATING IN COLD REGIONS 0 °F OR LOWER INCLUDING CANADA

FORD
1981 ESCORT, 1982 EXP WITH 1 .6L ENGINES

LINCOLN MERCURY
1981 LYNX, 1982 LN7 WITH 1 .6L ENGINES

In the event of a stall shortly after the initial cold and/or no start condition with the above mentioned vehicles, the fuel pump should be checked. Water from the crankcase vent hose could collect in the fuel pump oil well, flow into the casting cavity and freeze. The fuel pump lever arm movement is then restricted by ice, causing possible bending or breakage of the arm. The following procedure should alleviate this condition:

1. Perform the volume test in the 1981 Escort/Lynx Car Shop Manual, Section 24-30-2. If the volume is O.K., do not replace the fuel pump. If little or no flow is available, the fuel pump lever arm is probably broken.

2. Remove the fuel pump in accordance with the 1981 Escort/Lynx Car Shop Manual, Fuel Pump Section 24-30-1.

3. Install a new fuel pump and gasket.

4. Remove the closure hose from the rocker arm cover ventilation tube, located near the distributor and next to the fuel pump (Figure 22).

5. Insert the tube extension (E1FZ-6O601-A) in the rocker arm cover ventilation tube (Figure 22).

6. Reinstall the closure hose to the ventilation tube.

7. Paint a 12 mm (1/2") diameter yellow dot on the rocker arm cover near the ventilation tube to indicate that the tube extension has been installed. The subject vehicles with the yellow dot have already had the tube extension installed.

To avoid potential fuel pump concerns in cold climates, this procedure can be performed on vehicles in dealer stock and on vehicles which come in for other service under normal warranty coverage.
