Fig. 23 Crescent & gerotor type oil pumps:

Refer to Fig. 22, and measure the following clearances:
a. Outer race to housing: .0027-.0055 in. (.069-.140 mm).
b. Outer race and rotor to cover: .001-.0025 in. (.040-.66 mm.).
c. Relief valve to bore: .007-.0031 in. (.02-.08 mm). An engine oil leak at the oil pump hex socket plug on some 1982 vehicles may be serviced by applying sealer to the oil pump hex plug threads above the pressure relief valve plug. Remove hex plug and clean plug threads with a suitable solvent. Apply sealer No. E0AZ-19554A or equivalent to the plug threads. Torque plug to 21---24 ft. lbs. These plugs are not interchangeable and must not be overtorqued. On some engines built after March 31, 1983, a new gerotor gear design oil pump is being used, Fig. 23. The oil pump, oil pan and crankshaft used on models equipped with gerotor gear type oil pumps are not interchangeable with those used with the crescent type oil pump.
