Engine - Lack of Power

BULLETIN No. 827

April 7, 1982

LACK OF POWER

Lincoln-Mercury
l982-1/2 Lynx and LN7 with 1.6L HO Engine and Automatic Transmission

FORD
l982-1/2 Escort and EXP with 1.6L HO Engine and Automatic Transmission

Initial ignition timing has a significant impact on the performance of the 1.6L HO (High Output) engine. Some of the early HO engines were built with initial ignition timing set at 8 ° B.T.D.C. Engine performance on these engines can be improved by advancing the timing 2 ° for a total of 10 ° B.T.D.C. These early engines can be identified by engine codes.

1. Inspect the engine code label on all subject vehicles built before February 12, 1982.

2. Set initial timing to 10 ° B.T.D.C. on all engines with the following codes: UJ-63O-AA; UF-69O-AA; CJ-690-AA; CF-692-AA. (Refer to Car/Truck Shop Manual - Section 5.)

3. With a fine tip sharpie marking pen, change code suffix from "AA" to "BA" on Timing Belt Cover Engine Code label.
