DEALERSHIP OBLIGATIONS

The enclosed listing identifies involved units reported registered to owners in your dealership's area. Other eligible vehicles may be brought to your dealership for this recall service should be corrected as promptly as possible. If the owner of an eligible vehicle does not have a Customer Notification and Dealer Claim Form (FCS-1864), please complete a blank Form 1864 and submit it via the Direct Warranty Entry (DWE) system for reimbursement. To determine if a vehicle is eligible, you should use "CARES" (Computer Assisted Recall System) or "OASIS" (On-Line Automotive Service Information System).

Dealerships are obligated to perform the recall service promptly following tender of the vehicles by owners. It is important that you immediately report to your FPSD District Office any instance in which an owner will not allow you to complete this recall service because of objections to scheduling or for any other reason.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

INSPECT EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR) FUNCTION - ALL 1981-MODEL 49 STATE 5.0L ENGINE-EQUIPPED VEHICLES, (Vehicles with Kit Codes A and B, Calibrations 1-20A-R00/R01, and 1-20B-R01, Engine Codes BK-306/308-AA/AB, BK-324-AA, BK-312/316-AB).

Inspect the EGR valve function with the engine running at stabilized engine temperature as follows:

1. Plug the tailpipe with a socket allowing approximately a 1/4-inch opening to permit some of the exhaust gas to escape.

2. Disconnect the EGR valve vacuum source hose and attach a hand vacuum pump to the valve. With the engine idling, apply eight inches of vacuum to the EGR valve. The engine idle speed should decrease noticeably.

3. Stop the engine and remove the socket from the tailpipe.

4. If the idle speed did not decrease, replace the EGR valve.
