EMISSIONS RECALL U-7B - ADJUSTMENT OF THE ALTITUDE COMPENSATOR ON CERTAIN 1982-MODEL YEAR GRANADA/COUGAR AND THUNDERBIRD/XR-7 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES DEALERSHIPS HAVE SERVICE AND PARTS ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS.
Dear Owner:
This notice is sent to you by the Ford Motor Company as part of our responsibility to insure that emission control systems on our products are working properly. We have determined that certain 1982-model year Granada/Cougar and Thunderbird/XR-7 vehicles equipped with 3.8L engines may be inadequately compensating for the effects of altitude. Our records indicate that you own one of these vehicles which is identified by serial number on the enclosed form.
DESCRIPTION OF CONDITION:
Your vehicle is equipped with a device called an altitude compensator that may not have been properly adjusted. This device is designed to maintain acceptable levels of drive smoothness, fuel economy, and exhaust emissions control. If the compensator is not functioning properly, one or more of these levels may be too high.
SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:
Ford is voluntarily recalling your vehicle to adjust the altitude compensator and install additional compensator air supply components. These actions will help assure that your vehicle operates efficiently and the way it was designed for driveability, fuel economy, and air quality. This service will be performed at no charge to you.
IF YOU NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE:
Please remove the prepaid return postcard from the enclosed form (identified as FCS 1864). Complete Section 1, and return it to us. This information is needed to update our records.
TO HAVE THIS SERVICE PERFORMED:
^ Contact the nearest Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership in your area immediately to make a service appointment. The time needed to perform the repair is approximately one hour. Dealerships have service and parts ordering instructions.
^ Present the Form 1864 to your dealership when you take your vehicle in for service. The form authorizes him to perform this service. After repairing your vehicle, the dealership will return the form to us verifying that the required service has been performed. If you lose the Form 1864, the dealership will still service your vehicle at no charge to you.
IF THE DEALERSHIP FAILS TO PERFORM THE SERVICE ON A TIMELY BASIS AND WITHOUT CHARGE:
If you have difficulties in having this recall service performed, please complete Section 3 of the prepaid return postcard and mail it to us, or you may wish to contact the nearest Ford Parts and Service Division District Office whose address is shown in your Owner Guide. Any Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership can also furnish you the address.
Enclosed with this letter is an insert that provides the service interval at which the altitude compensator air filter must be replaced. Please moisten the reverse side of the insert and affix it to the appropriate page in the Scheduled Maintenance Services - Maintenance Schedule B (Emisson Control Systems) section of your Owner Guide.
We regret any inconvenience this recall may cause you. But we urge you to have this service performed in order to help assure proper operation of your vehicle and full protection under the emission warranty applicable to your vehicle. Failure to do so could reduce your vehicle's ability to comply with any mandated inspection/maintenance test requirements.
