"Tip-In" detonation on 1982, 3.8L equipped Granada/Cougar vehicles may be serviced by installing a new distributor and a vacuum regulator valve.
1. Remove distributor, cap, adaptor and rotor and fold back out of the way.
2. Remove original distributor.
3. Install new distributor. Reinstall rotor, cap and adaptor.

4. Remove vacuum vent valve and retaining clip from the air cleaner tray. Discard valve and clip (Figure 2).
5. Install rubber plug (377678-S) in opening in air cleaner tray.
6. Remove the vacuum vent valve connector from the vacuum hoses.

7. Identify the hose coming from the spark port on the carburetor which ran to the removed vent valve. Connect this hose to the proper location on vacuum regulator valve (9F490) being added (Figure 4).
8. Connect the remaining former vent valve vacuum hose which runs to the distributor port on the regulator valve (Figure 4).
9. Connect a new piece of 5/32" vacuum hose from the "manifold input" (Figure 4) of the regulator valve to any convenient manifold vacuum source.

10. Position vacuum regulator valve as shown in Figure 3. Check all connections for accuracy and vacuum leaks.
11. Set initial timing to 0 ° BTDC.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and alterations performed as shown below. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
