RECALL U-6W - INSPECTION AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACEMENT OF AIR CLEANER TEMPERATURE VACUUM SWITCH ON CERTAIN 1982 MODEL YEAR GRANADA AND COUGAR VEHICLES EQUIPPED With 2.3L ENGINES. DEALERS HAVE REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS AND PARTS.

Dear Owner:

This notice is sent to you by the Ford Motor Company as part of our responsibility to make sure that emission control systems are working properly on our products. Ford Motor Company has determined that certain 1982 model year Granada and Cougar vehicles equipped with 2.3L engines may have emission control systems that do not function properly. Our records indicate that you are the owner of one of those vehicles.

DESCRIPTION OF CONDITION:

An incorrect air cleaner temperature vacuum switch for the engine emission control system may have been installed on your vehicle when it was manufactured. Vehicles built with an incorrect temperature vacuum switch may, under certain conditions, emit pollutants in excess of Federal hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide standards.

SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:

Ford is voluntarily recalling your vehicle to correct this condition. We will inspect the temperature vacuum switch on your vehicle and, if necessary, replace the switch. This service will be performed at no charge to you.

IF YOU NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE:

Please remove the prepaid postcard from the enclosed form (identified as FCS 1864). Complete Section 1, and return it to us. Your input is needed to update our records.

TO HAVE THIS SERVICE PERFORMED:

Contact any Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership immediately to make a service appointment. The time needed to perform the installation is approximately one-half hour. Dealerships have repair instructions and parts.

Present the Form 1864 to your dealership when you take your vehicle in for service. The form authorizes him to perform this service. After repairing your vehicle, the dealership will return the form to us verifying that the required service has been performed. If you lose the Form 1864, the dealership will still repair your vehicle at no charge to you.

IF THE DEALERSHIP FAILS TO PERFORM THE REPAIR ON A TIMELY BASIS AND WITHOUT CHARGE:

Please complete Section 3 of the prepaid postcard and mail it to us if you have difficulties in having this recall service performed. Alternatively, you may wish to contact the nearest Ford Parts and Service Division District Office whose address is shown in your Owner1s Guide. Any Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership can also furnish you the address.

We regret the inconvenience this recall may cause you. But we urge you to have this service performed in order to help assure full protection under the emission warranty applicable to your vehicle. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be a lack of maintenance of your vehicle, and could reduce your vehicle's ability to comply with any mandated inspection/maintenance test requirements.
