Vehicles which exhibit stalls on transmission engagement or hesitations during cold engine driveaway can be serviced by repositioning the purge thermal vent valve and installing a new vacuum regulator valve (5.0L only).

Figure 5:
Figure 6:
1. Remove carburetor air cleaner assembly.
2. To reduce the adverse affect of engine heat on the thermal vent valve (Figure 4), the location within the -9C987- hose assembly must be modified. To accomplish this, follow Steps 1-7 on Figure 5 while using Figures 4 and 6 as reference points.
Figure 6:
3. Remove preformed hose at carburetor bowl vent connection. Cut hose 1/2" below the preformed elbow. Obtain connector (Part No. E25Y-9J313-A) and install with rubber hose attaching carburetor and plastic connector attaching hose connected to bowl vent solenoid (Figure 6).
4. Use bundling strap (Part No. 95874-S) as required to secure hoses away from moving parts and exhaust manifold.
5. Verify that C.E.R. is not sticking by pressing down on the rod while holding the choke diaphragm rod back in the diaphragm housing. Gently depress the C.E.R. adjusting nut, the C.E.R. should move up and down off its seat without any bind or interference. If interference is evident, the upper body must be loosened and recentered. Refer to TSB 82-2-26 for procedure.
NOTE: All vehicles with previous carburetor concerns should have their choke specifications verified. Setup procedures are shown in 8/82 Carburetor Flip Chart 0900-020 CPT 1982-3 and 2700/7200 Variable Venturi Handbook 2412-001. Also, proper indexing of the choke cap should be verified.

6. For 5.0L Engines Only - Remove existing D9BE- 9F490-AA (black) vacuum regulator valve and install new D9DZ-9F940-A (red) vacuum regulator.
7. Ensure that all vacuum hose routings and connections are secure and there are no kinks or potential obstructions.
8. Install carburetor air cleaner assembly.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
