Oil Pan: Service and Repair


1982---87 V8-255 & 302
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Disconnect accelerator cable and kickdown rod from carburetor or TV cables from throttle body.
3. Remove accelerator mounting bracket bolts and bracket, then the EGR valve, if necessary.
4. Remove fan shroud attaching screws and position shroud over fan.
5. Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector and remove wiper motor.
6. Disconnect windshield washer hose.
7. Remove wiper motor mounting cover.
8. Remove oil level dipstick, then the dipstick tube retaining bolt from exhaust manifold.
9. If equipped with EGR cooler or EEC, remove Thermactor air dump tube retaining clamp, then the Thermactor crossover tube at rear of engine.
10. On all models, raise and support vehicle.
11. Drain oil pan.
12. On vehicles equipped with EGR cooler or EEC, remove filler tube from transmission oil pan and drain transmission, then remove starter motor.
13. Disconnect fuel line at fuel pump and plug line. Vehicles equipped with electronic fuel injection use a high pressure electric fuel pump. Prior to disconnecting fuel lines from the pump, pressure must be released at the Schrader valve on the fuel charging assembly.
14. Disconnect exhaust pipes from manifolds.
15. If equipped with EGR cooler or EEC, remove exhaust gas sensor from exhaust manifold, then the Thermactor secondary air tube to converter housing clamps.
16. Loosen rear engine mount attaching nuts.
17. Remove engine mount through bolts.
18. Remove shift crossover bolts at transmission.
19. If equipped with EGR cooler or EEC, disconnect exhaust pipes from catalytic converter outlet, then the catalytic converter secondary air tube and inlet pipes to exhaust manifold.
20. On all models, disconnect transmission kickdown rod.
21. Remove torque converter housing cover.
22. Remove brake line retainer from front crossmember.
23. With a suitable jack, raise engine as far as possible.
24. Place a block of wood between each engine mount and chassis bracket. When engine is secured in this position, remove jack.
25. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower the oil pan.
26. Remove oil pickup tube bolts and lower tube in oil pan.
27. Remove oil pan from vehicle.
28. Reverse procedure to install.
