NOTE: On some vehicles, it is necessary to remove the carburetor to remove the rivets on the choke housing. Remove the top two rivets with a 1/8 inch diameter twist drill. The third bottom rivet is located in a "Blind" hole and is removed by lightly tapping the rear of the retainer ring using a punch and hammer. The rivet, retainer ring, choke housing and gasket can then be removed.
1. Fig. 7-Remove carburetor from vehicle, then remove choke cap.
2. Install choke weight tool T77L-9848-A7 on choke bimetal lever, then install dial indicator with contact positioned on top of cold enrichment metering rod and zero indicator.
3. Install stator cap and rotate to index, then note indicator reading. Reading should be between as indicated in Fig. 8, under the run position 75 degrees F column.
- If reading is not within limits, adjust by turning the choke enrichment adjusting nut until reading is within limits. Do not remove or reset dial indicator to check the start position 0 degrees F adjustment.
4. To check this adjustment, rotate thermostat lever clockwise until cold enrichment metering rod travel stop screw is bottomed against the upper body and note indicator reading.
- If reading is not within limits listed in Fig. 8, under start position 0 degrees F column, adjust by turning the travel stop screw. Without removing or resetting dial indicator, perform control vacuum regulator adjustment as described under Control Vacuum-Regulator (CVR) Adjustment, then recheck cold enrichment metering rod run position 75 degrees F adjustment.
5. Remove adjustment limiting diaphragm cover, then seat diaphragm using finger and note dial indicator reading, Fig. 9.
- If reading is not within limits listed in Fig. 8, under start position 75 degrees F column, rotate diaphragm until dial indicator reads within specifications.
6. Align holes on diaphragm and casting, then install diaphragm cover.
7. Push inward on diaphragm rod until diaphragm is seated, then rotate thermostat level clockwise until choke shaft lever pin touches fast idle intermediate lever and note indicator reading, Fig. 10.
- If reading is not within limits listed in Fig. 8, under run position 0 degrees F column, remove lead ball from choke diaphragm cover and rotate adjusting screw clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease height, Fig. 10.
8. After completing adjustment, install lead ball and choke cover.
