Reason for change

Complaint:

Red display message in instrument cluster "Power Steering Malfunction - See Owner's Manual" immediately after engine start, steering assistance reduced.

An acoustic warning also sounds.

Fault code P063500 is stored in the control unit of the electric power steering (ES) together with one of the following sub-faults 108, 176 or 209.

The sub-fault is logged in the control unit log or in the fault freeze frame data in the line "P063500 Root cause of DTC - failure ID" - see example in attachment (001).

Software of electric power steering.

Remedy:
Follow the procedure below exactly!

Model 204/207/212

1. Sub-fault 176 logged:

Perform software update of electric power steering (ES) control unit via "Adaptations"

The required software version is A212 902 90 06

^ Xentry Diagnostics DVD version 11/2012 with add-on 2589

^ Xentry Diagnostics DVD version 09/2012 with add-on 2588

2. Sub-fault 108 or 209 logged:

^ Check manufacture date of steering gear -> see digits 3 (year) and 4 (day) in attachment 002:

a. Manufacture date greater than or equal to "12065": Perform software update of electric power steering (ES) control unit - see step 1

b. Manufacture date less than "12065": Replace steering gear

Note:
Make sure that the current software is installed in the new electric power steering.

Model 231:

Sub-fault 108 or 209 logged:

Perform software update of electric power steering (ES) control unit via "Adaptations"

The required software version is A231 902 91 01

^ Xentry Diagnostics DVD version 09/2012 with add-on 2581

If the current software version is already installed, please submit PTSS case with all information.
