Pedestrian Protection System: Description and Operation

AH91.60-P-0001-01A Notes on Pedestrian Protection Sensor

General information
The pedestrian protection sensor consists of two pressure sensors that are connected with a hose. In the event of a collision, a pressure change results due to the deformation of the hose; this is recorded by the pressure sensors and transferred to the control unit.

Design
The pedestrian protection sensor is only delivered complete with pressure sensors and hose. The hose must not be separated from the pressure sensors as this may lead to a malfunction.

Check during repair work
During repair work on the pedestrian protection sensor or the bumper, a visual check must always be performed. If damage caused by external influences (e.g. animal bite marks, pressure marks, etc.) is visible during this check, the pedestrian protection sensor is to be replaced.

Check following an accident
If the bumper is removed due to a collision, the impact absorbers must absolutely be examined.
If the impact absorbers are damaged or defective, they must be replaced. In this case, the pedestrian protection sensor must always also be replaced.
If the impact absorbers are undamaged, the pedestrian protection sensor can be used again following a visual check.

Installation
During assembly, always make sure that the hose is routed in the groove of the impact absorbers without kinks, twisting or tension. Incorrect routing may lead to a malfunction.

Repair
Repair of the hose is not permissible.
