The radio is located in the center console.

Central operating and display unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle
The radio provides the user with a structured and uniform interface, which is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display.

Reading in the controls and input signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
^ Direct line
^ Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN)
^ Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Direct line
The radio is equipped with the following direct connections:
- Circuit 30g
- Circuit 31
- Wake-up for MOST
- Electrical AUX connector (X39/45) in stowage compartment (telephone compartment) below center armrest, for external audio equipment) (except code (518) Media interface)
- USB electrical connector (X115) in stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the center armrest
- Telephone muting (with code (348) Emergency call/assist system or code (359) TELEAID emergency call system)
- FM, AM and CL [ZV] antenna amplifier (A2/18)
- FM 2, DAB and TV 3 antenna amplifier (A2/19)
- Bluetooth(R) antenna (A2/91)
- Cradle for navigation module (A2/30-1) (with code (508) Navigation box preinstallation or code (509) Navigation box)

CAN
The radio is a subscriber of the interior CAN (CAN B) and the telematics CAN (CAN A).

MOST
Control and audio signals from the following control units:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)

Evaluation of input factors
The input values are processed in the radio.

Activation of output media and system components
The following direct output signals are possible:
- Audio output (speaker) (except code (810) Sound system)
- Switching voltage for telephony to Bluetooth module (A34/7) (with code (386) Comfort telephony or with code (379) Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP)
- Microphone output to emergency call system control unit (N123/4) (with code (348) Emergency call/Assist system or code (359) TELEAID emergency call system) or to bracket for navigation module (with code (508) Navigation box preinstallation or code (509) Navigation box)
- Provision of a structured and uniform interface for the following system components:
- Audio system (e.g. "Radio", "CD" (also MP3), "AUX")
- Communication system (e.g. telephone with telephone book function)
- Sound settings (e.g. "Bass", "Treble", "Balance")
- System settings (e.g. "brightness" and "contrast" of the Audio/COMAND display)

Function
The buttons on the radio operating panel are read in and made available to the central computer. The button operations are processed further in the central computer and forwarded via MOST, the telematics CAN and the interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the "ON" button on the radio is pressed, the radio switches on. The volume for audio and videos sources is regulated by turning the "ON" button.The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user.

CD drive
The integrated CD drive can be used to play audio CDs (including in MP3 format).
