Parallel support
A digital vernier caliper (01) with a length of 500 mm is required to determine the size of the shim.
The values TH_old (clearance height) and GH_old (transmission height) must be determined using a digital vernier caliper (01), the other value required for determining the shim size, GM_new (transmission housing dimension new) can be taken from the specification of the new transmission housing (5).
Clean
1 Thoroughly clean the face and contact surfaces on the drive pinion for the transfer case, thrust plate on the park pawl gear (6), transmission output shaft (7), guide sleeve (22) and sealing surface on the transmission housing (5).
Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper.
Otherwise the face and contact surfaces may be damaged.
Ensure absolute cleanliness is given as otherwise measurement errors will occur. These will result in damage to the transmission.
2 Set transmission housing (5) to upright position (set transmission output shaft (7) upwards).
01 Digital vernier caliper
5 Transmission housing
6 Park pawl gear
7 Transmission output shaft
22 Guide sleeve
A Clearance height TH_old
Measure clearance height TH_old (A)
3 Measure clearance height TH_old (A) using digital vernier caliper (01), as shown, and note down value.
Clearance height TH_old (A): Measure from the face on the transmission housing (5) to the guide sleeve (22) on the park pawl gear (6) and along the transmission output shaft (7).
When measuring the clearance height TH_old (A) the guide sleeve (22) must be installed, but the shim must be removed.
Repeat the measurement 3 times. The mean value is required for further calculations. The difference between the minimum and the maximum value must not exceed 0.1 mm, otherwise the measurement has to be repeated.
4 Set transmission housing (5) upright onto the parallel gauges (02).
Measure housing height GH_old (B)
5 Measure housing height GH_old (B) using digital vernier caliper (01), as shown, and note down value. Transmission housing GH_old (B): Measure from face on transmission housing (5) to a parallel gauge (02).
The digital vernier caliper (01) must be positioned in the center in the transmission housing (5) and absolutely vertical on the selected parallel gauge (02).
Repeat the measurement 3 times. The mean value is required for further calculations.
The difference between the minimum and the maximum value must not exceed 0.1 mm, otherwise the measurement has to be repeated.
6 Calculate size of shim
Calculation of shim size for adjusting total transmission axial clearance after replacing the transfer case:
Shim size:
Clearance height TH_old (A)
- Housing height GH_old (B)
+ Transmission housing dimension_new (GM_new)
------------------------------
= Shim size "S"
Example calculation:
Shim size:
44.82 mm (TH_old) (A)
- 477.02 mm (GH_old) (B)
+ 434.20 mm (GM_new)
------------------------------
2 mm
Shims are available in sizes 1.4 to 2.1 mm in increments of 0.1 mm. In the above-mentioned calculation example a shim size of 2 mm is required.
