1 Unscrew self-locking nut from tie rod joint.
2 Check variant of steering knuckle and tie rod ball joint.
Component Identification:
Old steering knuckle
On 06 model year vehicles steering knuckles (7) with a smaller contact surface (arrow) for the tie rod ball joint (10) can be fitted.
3 Mount puller.
Slide the open end opening of the puller carefully between the steering knuckle and boot of the tie rod ball joint (10).
Puller:
(Fa. Klann, Donaueschingen, order no. KL-0164-2)
Do not damage rubber boot, as otherwise lubricant may leak from the tie rod joint (10).
Component Identification:
New steering knuckle
These steering knuckles (7) have an enlarged contact surface (arrow) for the tie rod ball joint (10).
4 Mount thrust piece.

5 Pry off tie rod ball joint (10) using puller and press.
Observe variant of tie rod ball joint (10).

for the tie rod ball joint without stainless steel contact ring.
Puller 221 589 05 33 00
for tie rod ball joint with stainless steel contact ring.
Component Identification:
The stainless steel contact ring (9) is vulcanized into the rubber boot (contact surface to steering knuckle (7)).
To check the variant: Clean the rubber boot and contact surface on the steering knuckle if necessary.
Position the puller accurately so that the stainless steel contact ring (9) is not damaged.
Do not damage rubber boot, as otherwise lubricant may leak from the tie rod joint (10)
6 Remove puller, press and thrust piece.
Attaching
7 Clean tapered connection.
Grease or oil must not be present at the cone and thread, as otherwise the tie rod joint (10) could work its way loose.
8 Replace self-locking nut and tighten to specified torque.
Counter ball head with an Allen wrench if necessary.
