Passenger-side seat occupied recognition, general
The front passenger seat occupation status is always sensed by the supplemental restraint system (SRS). With code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]) a fitted child seat is also detected.
The automatic child seat recognition is only guaranteed to work with a child seat that has been approved and coded by Daimler This child seat is equipped with two transponders (resonators), which are located in its base on the left and right
The passenger-side seat occupied recognition consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for front passenger seat occupied recognition
^ Function sequence for issuing status and fault messages (with code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE])
Function sequence for front passenger seat occupied recognition
In vehicles with code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]), the front passenger seat occupation and automatic child seat recognition are recorded by the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) and the data are forwarded to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).
In vehicles without code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]), the front passenger seat occupation is recorded by the front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor (B41/1) and forwarded to the restraint systems control unit.
The following situations are defined:
- Seat unoccupied:
If the seat belt is not buckled, the front passenger airbag unit, front passenger sidebag unit and front passenger emergency tensioning retractor unit are disabled. If the seat belt is buckled, the front passenger airbag unit is switched off.
- Seat occupied (light or heavy person):
The front passenger airbag unit is enabled (ignition of first stage or both stages).
- Child seat detected (with code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE])):
The front passenger airbag unit is switched off.
Without code (U18) Automatic child seat recognition (ACSR [AKSE]) the occupation status of the front passenger seat does not influence the supplemental restraint system's deployment characteristic. Only a seat belt reminder warning is output via the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1).
Function sequence for outputting status and fault messages
The output of status and fault messages consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for actuating the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (S6/2e1)
^ Function sequence for outputting fault messages
Function sequence for actuating the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp
The signal for switching on the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp when a child seat is detected is transmitted by the restraint systems control unit to the central gateway control unit (N93) via the chassis CAN. The central gateway control unit routes the signal along the interior CAN to the upper control panel control unit (N72/1). This switches the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp in the cockpit switch group (S6/2) on or off via the instrument panel LIN.
Function sequence for outputting fault messages
If the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor is defective or communication with the restraint systems control unit is interrupted (e.g. plug not connected), the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp is also switched on. A fault is also stored in the restraint systems control unit and an appropriate message is shown on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
If the child seat is defective or improperly positioned (only one resonator detected), the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster and the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp are switched on.
