Overall network
The further development of the driver information system as well as the roll-out of video-based, driver-supported systems (backup camera, ambient sensor technology, etc.), are reflected in the requirements placed on the data bus systems.

A data bus is a data collection line, the data of which can be used by all the control units connected.

Function
Most control units of the vehicle are linked to each other via data bus lines, in other words there is no direct electrical connection between a sensor and the executing actuator.

A corresponding message (data) is generated using the sensor signal and made available to the data bus system. However, the data flow must be controlled using an access procedure (log) if all control units utilize a common bus line.

When transferring data within a Controller Area Network (CAN bus), the connected control units are not addressed, but rather the content of a message (e.g. rpm or engine temperature) is marked by a unique identifier.

With the subsequent acceptance filtering, all control units - upon correct reception of the message - use the identifier to determine whether the data are relevant for them or not.

Overall network
Basically, the following data bus systems are involved in the networking:
- Telematics CAN
- Interior CAN
- Drive train CAN
- Diagnostic CAN
- Chassis CAN
- Central CAN
- Front end CAN
- Vehicle dynamics CAN
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Distinguishing features
- The telematics CAN is responsible for telecommunication data transfer. It networks the COMAND controller unit with the control units for the rear functions. The telematics CAN operates at a transfer rate of 125 kBit/s.
- The interior CAN is responsible for data transfer in the vehicle interior. It interconnects the different systems that can be operated by the driver or the front passenger (e.g. power windows, interior air conditioning system etc.). The interior CAN operates at a transfer rate of 125 kBit/s.
- The drive train CAN is responsible for data transfer for the drive systems. The drive train CAN operates at a transfer rate of 500 kBit/s.
- The diagnostic CAN is responsible for transferring the diagnostic data to STAR DIAGNOSIS and for connecting the emergency call system control unit.
- The diagnostics CAN operates at a transfer rate of 500 kBit/s. The chassis CAN is responsible for data transfer between the chassis systems. The chassis CAN operates at a transfer rate of 500 kBit/s.
- The central CAN is primarily responsible for data transfer between the COMAND controller unit (telematics CAN, MOST) and the central gateway control unit. The central CAN operates at a transfer rate of 500 kBit/s.
- The front end CAN is responsible for data transfer between the Xenon headlamp control units, electric parking brake control unit to the central gateway control unit. The front end CAN operates at a transfer rate of 500 kBit/s.
- The vehicle dynamics CAN is responsible for data transfer from driving safety systems (e.g. Distronic, Night View Assist, rotational speed etc.). The vehicle dynamics CAN operates at a transfer rate of 500 kBit/s.
