Function description for dynamic inflating/deflating the air cushions in the multicontour seat (massage function), general
To prevent any tension in the back during long journeys, the multicontour seats (MCS [MKS]) are equipped with a dynamic inflating/deflating function for the air cushions (massage function). There is a choice of two massage function variants:
- gentle massage
- firm massage
Pressing the gentle massage function button (N72/2s17) or the firm massage function button (N72/2s18) in the rear control panel control unit (N72/2) actuates the massage function via the left rear multicontour backrest control unit (N32/20) or the right rear multicontour backrest control unit (N32/21). In doing so, the signals from the rear control panel control unit are read in over the telematics CAN (CAN A) by the COMAND control unit (A40/3) and sent by the central CAN (CAN F) on the interior CAN via the central gateway control unit (N93) to the left rear multicontour backrest control unit or the right rear multicontour backrest control unit.
Abort conditions
- Inflation or deflation timeout
- Adjustment request based on memory
- Adjustment request based on PRE-SAFE
For manual inflation or deflation as well as for adjustment request based on memory, the massage function is only interrupted for the duration of the inflation or deflation process.
Blocking
When the following fault is active, the function is blocked for the running ignition sequence:
- Inflation or deflation timeout
The dynamic inflation/deflation of the air cushions in the multicontour seat (massage function) is structured as follows:
^ Start and end
^ Sequence of programs
^ Valve control
^ Compressed-air supply
Start and end
By pressing the left seat selection button (N72/2s12) or the right seat selection button (N72/2s13) in the RCP [HBF] control unit, the corresponding MCS can be selected. Pushing the rocker switch for the gentle massage function button or firm massage function button forwards starts the massage program stage "1 gentle" or stage "2 firm". Pulling the corresponding massage function button to the rear switches off the respective massage function. The massage function is automatically ended after 20 cycles. One cycle includes the inflation and deflation of all massage pockets in the 7-layer massage insert.
Sequence of programs
Massage program "1 gentle"
As long as the massage function is active, the contour of the 1st layer of the massage insert is sequentially altered by inflating, maintaining and relieving the pressure. After a defined waiting time, the cycle for layer 2 is started according to the same pattern. If the waiting time has elapsed during inflation of layer 7 of the massage insert, the cycle is continued with layer 1.
Massage program "2 firm"
As long as the massage function is active, the contour of the massage inserts is sequentially altered, first by inflating layer 1 for a defined inflation period, maintaining the pressure for a defined holding time and then deflating layer 1 for a defined deflation period. During the massage program "2 firm" however, the air cushions are inflated with a higher pressure and the program run last longer than with massage program "1 gentle". After a defined waiting time, the cycle for layer 2 is started according to the same pattern.
If the waiting time has elapsed during inflation of layer 7 of the massage insert, the cycle is continued with layer 1.
The difference in pressure between a deflated and an inflated massage cushion is approx. 150 mbar. A wave motion is generated through alternate inflation and deflation of the massage cushions. After approx. 6 to 12 minutes, depending on the selected massage function, the program is automatically ended and the massage insert air cushions are deflated.
Valve control
The valves are located in the massage insert. They are actuated by the respective rear multicontour backrest control unit with 220 V DC.
Compressed-air supply
The air supply, required for inflating the air cushions, is supplied by the multicontour seat pneumatic pump.
