Digital Audio Broadcasting (Digital Radio) (DAB), general
The Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) allows reception of stations in DAB format.
DAB offers the following advantages:
- Reliable and static-free reception of radio stations
- Reception of international radio stations
- High sound quality
- Future-safe by multi-media capability
DAB enables a number of programs, known as an "ensemble", to be received over one frequency.
An "ensemble" can consist of up to 12 programs. Up to 64 frequencies are available for DAB.
In the United Kingdom, up to 7 of these frequencies can be received simultaneously; generally the number is 2 to 3 frequencies.
Each program can have subprograms (e.g. news announcement, summary of events.).
Only the "ensemble name", not the frequency, is displayed for the individual "ensembles".
The DAB functions are controlled by the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).
The DAB functions are controlled assisted by menus using one of the following controls:
- Front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
It is only possible to select stations in the memory list or station list with the multifunction steering wheel button groups. A change in "Ensembles" can only be made using the control buttons on the front central operating unit.
The menu system is displayed by the COMAND controller unit in the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or in the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW). The control signals from the front central operating unit are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are transferred to the COMAND control unit over the following path:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN (CAN F)
The COMAND controller unit transmits the corresponding signals over MOST to the Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit.
Function sequence for DAB radio
The DAB L-band antenna receives the DAB L-band signals for the local broadcasts, usually from conurbation stations.
The rear window antenna amplifier module receives DAB band III signals via the rear window antenna structures for large-area provision, usually from stations with a large range or national stations.
These signals are forwarded to the Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit using coaxial cables.
The Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit decodes the signals and transmits them in the form of pulse code modulation signals via MOST to the audio tuner control unit (N93/1).
The audio tuner control unit processes the received signals accordingly, amplifies them and outputs the audio signals over the vehicle's speaker system.
The audio output in model 216 takes place using the following components:
- Left door rear speaker (H4/3)
- Right door rear speaker (H4/4)
- Bass module speaker (H4/17)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
- Left door Sound tweeter (H4/68)
- Right door Sound tweeter (H4/69)
- Left door Sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/72)
- Right door Sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/73)
The audio output in model 221 takes place using the following components:
- Left rear door speaker group (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker group (H4/4)
- Bass module speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left rear surround speaker
- Right rear surround speaker
- Left front door Sound tweeter (H4/68)
- Right front door Sound tweeter (H4/69)
- Left front door Sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/72)
- Right front door Sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/73)
