GF82.60-P-2003LE Volume/Tone Adjustments, Function
- with CODE (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation)
- with CODE (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)
- with CODE (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation)

Function requirements, general
^ C. 30g ON or c. 15R ON
^ The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) is authorized and an audio source is in operation

Volume/tone adjustments, general
The functionalities for volume and sound settings as well as for amplification of audio signals run in the audio tuner control unit (N93/1) before the audio signals are output via the speaker system. The functionalities are controlled by the COMAND control unit (A40/3). The current settings for volume and tone are displayed on the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or on the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW).

The volume and tone settings can be made using the following components:
- "+" and "-" button, for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) in the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Volume control (A40/9r1) and rotary pushbutton (A40/9s11) at the front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (up to 31.5.09 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), as of 1.6.09)

On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the COMAND controller unit is provided with a tone setting "Surround Sound (Logic 7)" in addition to the general tone settings (bass, treble, balance and fader).

The COMAND controller unit transmits the audio signals via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the audio tuner control unit, which amplifies them and outputs them over the vehicle's speaker system.
The speaker system in model 216 comprises the following components:
- Left door speaker group (H4/1)
(without code (810) Sound system)
- Right door speaker group (H4/2)
(without code (810) Sound system)
- Left door rear speaker (H4/3)
- Right door rear speaker (H4/4)
- Bass module speaker (H4/17)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)

- In addition with code (810) Sound system:
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
- Left door sound tweeter (H4/68)
- Right door sound tweeter (H4/69)
- Left door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/72)
- Right door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/73)

The speaker system in model 221 comprises the following components:
- Left front door speaker group (H4/1)
(without code (810) Sound system)
- Right front door speaker group (H4/2)
(without code (810) Sound system)
- Left rear door speaker group (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker group (H4/4)
- Bass module speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)

- In addition with code (810) Sound system:
- Left rear surround speaker
- Right rear surround speaker
- Left front door sound tweeter (H4/68)
- Right front door sound tweeter (H4/69)
- Left front door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/72)
- Right front door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/73)

The volume and sound settings are subdivided into the following partial functions:
^ Function sequence for manual volume/sound settings
^ Function sequence for speed-dependent volume control (SDV [GAL]) and dynamic range optimization (DRO) (DRO up to 31.5.09)

Function sequence for manual volume/sound settings
The manual volume/sound settings are subdivided into the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for volume settings via the right multifunction steering wheel button group
^ Function sequence for volume/tone settings via the front central operating unit
^ Function sequence for tone setting of voice output for navigation (without code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation)

Function sequence for volume settings via the right multifunction steering wheel button group
Pressing the "+" and "-" button for setting specific functions and volume control allows the volume for the desired audio function to be increased or decreased.

The control signals of the "+" and "-" button for setting specific functions and volume control are forwarded to the audio tuner control unit over the following route:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN (CAN F)
- COMAND controller unit
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Function sequence for volume/tone settings via the front central operating unit
The front central operating unit enables the volume for the desired audio function to be increased or reduced by pressing the volume control.
The tone settings can be selected in the "Tone" menu in the function bar of the COMAND display using the rotary pushbutton.

The audio tuner control unit enables sound settings to be made manually for each audio source. The tone settings configured for the radio mode are simultaneously valid for any traffic announcements. When changing the sound emphasis (balance, fader), the ratio of the volume of the individual speakers or speaker groups changes.
The control signals of the front central operating unit are forwarded via the following path to the audio tuner control unit:
- Telematics CAN
- COMAND controller unit
- MOST

Changing the volume of an audio source has an identical effect on all other audio sources. The volume is also jointly regulated within the output sources in the same manner. Predefined settings can be selected and reset to the manufacturer default setting via the system settings.

Function sequence for tone setting of voice output for navigation (without code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation)
The sound settings of the voice output during navigation can be individually adjusted. Selected settings for voice output during navigation also influence the tone setting of the VCS [SBS].

Function sequence for speed-dependent volume control (SDV [GAL]) and dynamic range optimization (DRO) (DRO up to 31.5.09)
The speed-dependent volume control can be used to adapt the volume to the noise level in the vehicle interior. In this case, the vehicle speed signal is used as the reference value. This procedure will run automatically. After evaluating the relationship indicator, th audio output is matched to the noise level in the vehicle interior. Depending on the vehicle speed signal, the audio tuner control unit raises or lowers the output level of the audio signals.

The audio tuner control unit receives the vehicle speed signal for speed-dependent volume control via the following path:
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- Central CAN
- COMAND controller unit
- MOST

On vehicles with code (810) Sound system up to 31.5.09, the volume is also adapted to the noise level in the vehicle interior using the automatic vehicle interior noise adaptation dynamic range optimization. The vehicle speed signal and signal input are also used by the sound amplifier microphone (B25/6) as relationship indicators here. The microphone signal is read in and evaluated directly by the audio tuner control unit.
