Multifunction display (A1p13) on instrument cluster (A1)
1 Parking space search activated - no parking space found
The function Parking Guidance (also known as Advanced Parking Guidance (APG)) assists the driver to find an adequately long parking space and to optimally park in this space. The driver is responsible here for estimating (plausibility checking) the found parking space as well as for longitudinal and lateral guidance of the vehicle itself.
Function requirements
^ "Circuit 61 ON" (engine running)
^ Park Assist and Advanced Parking Guidance (Parking Guidance) coded in Central gateway control unit (N93)
^ Radar sensor system not deactivated
It is not necessary to activate the Parking Guidance. When driving at a speed of <40 km/h the parking spaces are continuously being measured by external radar sensors in the bumpers (on both sides on the right and left of the vehicle) and stored over a distance of about 15 m.
Display of the Parking Guidance takes place in the multifunction display (A1p13) of instrument cluster (A1) at a speed of <16 km/h.
This speed threshold of 16 km/h prevents unnecessary operating instructions and strong braking maneuvers in urban traffic.
When Parking Guidance is active the symbol "P" with a black background appears in the multifunction display.
Found parking spaces are displayed by the symbol "P" with a blue background and a white arrow (for the side of the street on which the parking space was found).
On parking spaces on the passenger-side of the vehicle are displayed as standard. To also display parking spaces on the driver-side (e.g. in one-way streets) the driver the turn signal to the driver's side.
The Parking Guidance recognizes a longitudinal parking space according to the following criteria:
^ It is free space limited to the rear (e.g. by a vehicle).
^ Its lies parallel to the curve of the road.
^ It is at least 1.5 m wide.
^ It is at least 1 m longer that the vehicle.
Alignment in the parking space
Delimitation at the side of the parking space is established by a recognized obstacle (e.g. a curb or pole). If an obstacle is detected on the side the vehicle is aligned in alignment to the front or rear obstacle (vehicle). The tangential deviation in this case is determined by the direction of travel at the beginning of the parking space.
The target position of the vehicle it generally as far back and deeply into the parking space as possible.
Parking instructions
1 Parking space search activated - parking space found
2 Parking space found on the right side
3 Turn signal set to the right
4 Found parking space
5 Nominal driving lane (for optimum parking)
6 Actual driving lane (according to the current steering angle)
If the vehicle is stopped at the usual distance from the parking space and put into reverse gear, a safety note is displayed. This must first be acknowledged by the driver before the steering instructions for an optimal parking curve (nominal driving lane) is indicated to him in the multifunction display. The parking curve consists of two arc of circles with a constants radius and possibly a straight line for reversing up to the first arc of circle.
Parking (first arc of circle)
1 Parking space search activated - parking space found
2 Parking space found on the right side
3 Turn signal set to the right
4 Found parking space
7 Actual driving lane = nominal driving lane (optimum parking)
8 Retaining clamp (stopping or guide point)
9 Distance indicator "Park Assist" on the right side of the vehicle
Through turning the steering wheel the actual driving lane (red) should be brought into line with the nominal driving lane (yellow). When the steering angle is set correctly the two lanes will be superimposed one on the other and the color changes (green). A white retaining clamp appears at the end of the lane which indicates the next retaining or guide point.
Dependent on the distance of the current location to the parking space, the driver must reverse the vehicle up to the indicated stopping position.
If the driver reaches the retaining or guide point, depending on the speed of the vehicle, a signal tone for Stop Vehicle sounds in the instrument cluster.
Parking (second arc of circle)
3 Turn signal set to the right
4 Found parking space
7 Actual driving lane = nominal driving lane (optimum parking)
8 Retaining clamp (stopping or guide point)
9 Distance indicator "Park Assist" on the right side of the vehicle
If the driver has stopped the vehicle he will again be shown the a nominal and actual driving lane. Once the driver has steered to the status according to instructions given (actual driving lane = nominal driving lane) then the nominal driving lane will displayed again in green and the vehicle can be reversed to the next stopping point. At the end of the second arc of circle the signal tone sounds again to stop and the message "Parking Guidance complete" appears for about 5 seconds in the multifunction display.
Maneuvering mode
The vehicle has come to a standstill a warning tone can come from the "Park Assist" depending in the parking situation (e.g. for an excessively small distance to the rear obstacle). The Parking Guidance changes into maneuvering mode in which the vehicle is shown in the parking space "without lanes".
The vehicle must not always be standing parallel to the curb in the parking space at the end of the second arc of circle. In small parking spaces the Parking Guidance tries to guide the driver in such a way that he stops as deeply as possible in the parking space. The driver can then position the vehicle in the parking space through suitable maneuvering (with the aid of the "Park Assist" and the parking space indicator).
Warning mode (obstacle warning)
When reversing if the system detects an obstacle on the proposed parking curve, the driver is requested to stop the vehicle by a change in the presentation in the multifunction display and the signal tone:
^ The lane is also no longer green for the correct rotation angle but red.
^ The retaining clamp is set at the determined position of the obstacle and the retaining clamp, lane and parking space flash.
If the Parking Guide recognizes that the obstacle has been removed again the display goes back into normal mode and the Parking Guide can be finished as usual.
If the obstacle is located in an area of the vehicle which is not covered by the radar sensor system then the Parking Guide remains in warning mode.
If the vehicle drives over the position recognized as critical then warning mode will end and the Parking Guide changes again into normal mode.
Deactivation
^ The Parking Guide is deactivated upon ignoring the steering instructions if, due to the current position, no parking curve with an acceptable end position can be found anymore. The note "Parking Guide discontinued" appears in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
^ If the Park Assist is deactivated via the PTS OFF switch (S6/2s12) then the Parking Guide will be deactivated at the same time. The LED in PTS OFF switch goes out.
Following each engine start, Park Assist the Parking Guide are automatically switched back on (LED in PTS OFF switch is off).
^ Parking guidance is deactivated when the trailer is hitched to the vehicle. (The trailer is detected via the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
^ The function Park Assist is ended by selecting the drive position "P" or by leaving the parking space.
^ If an Electronic Stability Program control intervention function occurs (e.g. in the case of skidding wheels) while measuring the parking spaces the vehicle position cannot be determined so clearly anymore. Measured parking spaces are ignored in such a case and the current Parking Guide is ended with the note "Parking Guide discontinued". The symbol for parking space searching goes fades out for about 5 seconds.
The parking spaces continue to be measured by the radar sensors after deactivation of the Parking Guide and can be displayed immediately upon activation of the Parking Guide.
Shutoff
In addition, the radar sensor system can be switched off via the left or right multifunction steering wheel button group (S110 and S111) in the "Settings" menu, menu item "Radar sensor system" in the instrument cluster. The driver can "only" reactivate the Parking
Guide when required by switching on the radar sensor system via the menu in the instrument cluster.
Error and warning messages (from 08/2007)
The instrument cluster only displays messages for guiding parking for coded Parking Guidance (in the Central gateway control unit).
All warning and error messages of the Park assistant are therefore reported with the title "Parking guidance" instead of "Park Assistant".
