Operating instruction
The following controls are available for accepting, rejecting or toggling a call:
- Buttons on mobile phone (no toggle)
- Telephone buttons or the keypad on the center console button group
- Multifunction steering wheel button group

Function sequence, call signal
The mobile phone receives a call signal via the following route:
- Telephone and GPS antenna (A2/49) (model 216)
- Telephone and GPS roof antenna (A2/49) (model 221)
- Direct line
- Cell phone separation point
- Adapter cable

The caller is shown on the display of the mobile phone and the information is simultaneously forwarded to the COMAND controller unit and the COMAND display (A40/8) via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- Cell phone separation point
- Direct line
- COMAND controller unit
- Low Voltage Differential Signal (LVDS) line

With model 216 the COMAND controller unit outputs the call tone via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and the audio tuner control unit (N93/1) on the following speakers:
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Left door sound tweeter (H4/68)
- Right door sound tweeter (H4/69)
- Left door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/72)
- Right door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/73)

With model 221 the COMAND controller unit outputs the call tone via the MOST and the audio tuner control unit on the following speakers:
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left front door sound tweeter (H4/68)
- Right front door sound tweeter (H4/69)
- Left front door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/72)
- Right front door sound woofer and midrange speaker group (H4/73)

At the same time the COMAND controller unit reduces the volume of the currently active audio source (e.g. the radio) by 15 dB. The currently active audio source is not muted until the caller accepts the call (MUTE). This takes place in the COMAND controller unit. The caller ID is shown by the COMAND controller unit on the COMAND display. The caller ID is also displayed via the central CAN on the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1).

A mobile phone that is not connected to the adapter cable and operated via Bluetooth receives the call signal via the antenna of the mobile phone. The call signal is then forwarded to the COMAND controller unit in the via the following route:
- Mobile phone antenna
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Direct line

Function sequence, accept call using mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "Accept call" button on the mobile phone serves to accept the call in handsfree mode.
The control signals of the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and forwarded via the following route to the COMAND controller unit:
- Adapter cable
- Cell phone separation point
- Direct line

On a mobile phone that is not connected to the cell phone separation point and operated via Bluetooth, the control signals are internally processed by the mobile phone buttons and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via the following route.
- Mobile phone antenna
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line

Function sequence, accept call using telephone buttons or keypad on the center console button group
Pressing the "Accept phone call" button or selecting the "Accept" function in the "Telephone" menu item via the keypad of the center console button group causes the call to be accepted in handsfree mode. The control signals from the center console button group are routed as follows:
- COU [ZBE] LIN
- Front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Telematics CAN

Function sequence, accept call using multifunction steering wheel button groups
The call is accepted in handsfree mode by pressing the accept/ terminate phone call button (S111s3) in the right multifunction steering wheel button group. The control signals of the accept/ terminate phone call button are forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via the following components:
- Steering LIN
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN

Function sequence, telephone call in hands-free mode
After the telephone call has been accepted, the COMAND controller unit receives or transmits the mobile phone signals or data via the following route:
- Telephone and GPS antenna (model 216)
- Telephone and GPS roof antenna (model 221)
- Cell phone separation point
- Direct line

Voice input in handsfree mode is picked up by the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via a direct line.

With model 216 the voice output is output on the following speakers by the COMAND controller unit via the MOST and the audio tuner control unit:
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left door sound tweeter
- Right door sound tweeter
- Left door sound woofer and midrange speaker group
- Right door sound woofer and midrange speaker group

With model 221 the voice output is output on the following speakers by the COMAND controller unit via the MOST and the audio tuner control unit:
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left front door sound tweeter
- Right front door sound tweeter
- Left front door sound woofer and midrange speaker group
- Right front door sound woofer and midrange speaker group

The telephone connection is generally established in handsfree mode after accepting a call, regardless of whether the mobile phone is connected to the adapter cable.
If a mobile phone that is connected to the adapter cable is disconnected from the adapter cable and therefore detached from the COMAND controller unit after the telephone connection has been established in handsfree mode, the telephone call is then conducted in "private mode". If the mobile phone is connected again to the adapter cable during the course of a call, the telephone call is continued in the hands-free mode again.

With a mobile phone that is not connected to the adapter cable and operated via Bluetooth, after accepting the call in handsfree mode by activating the private mode" menu item you can switch to "private mode" by pressing the button on the headset.

When in "private mode" the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation.

Function sequence, reject call using mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "End" button on the mobile phone rejects the call. The control signals of the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via the same route as in "Function sequence, accept call via buttons on mobile phone".

Function sequence, reject call using telephone buttons or keypad on the center console button group
Pressing the "End" button once or selecting the "Accept" function in the "Telephone" menu item via the keypad of the center console button group causes the call to be held. Pressing the "End" button twice or activating the "Reject" function in the "Telephone" menu item via the keypad of the center console button group causes the call to be rejected. The control signals from the telephone buttons and the keypad of the center console button group are forwarded via the same route that is described in "Function sequence, accept call via telephone buttons and keypad in center console button group".

Function sequence, reject call using multifunction steering wheel button groups
Pressing the accept/terminate phone call button of the right multifunction steering wheel button group rejects the call. The control signal of the accept/terminate phone call button is forwarded in the same way as described in "Function sequence, accept call via the multifunction steering wheel button groups".

Function sequence, toggle call using telephone buttons or keypad on the center console button group
If another call signal arrives when a call is already in progress, this is generated on the COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit. Now the telephone call can be accepted or rejected using the telephone buttons or by activating the "Accept" function or the "Reject" function in the "Telephone" menu item using the keypad of the center console button group. If the incoming call is accepted, it is activated in the hands-free mode and the existing call is put on hold. If the incoming call is rejected, the existing call remains active in the hands-free mode.

Function sequence, toggle a call using multifunction steering wheel button groups
If another call signal arrives when a call is already in progress, this is generated on the COMAND display by the COMAND controller unit. The call can now be accepted or rejected by pressing the accept/terminate phone call button in the right multifunction steering wheel button group. The control signal of the accept/terminate phone call button is routed as described in "Function sequence, accept call via multifunction steering wheel button groups". If the incoming telephone call is accepted, it becomes active in handsfree mode and the call that is currently in progress is held. If the incoming call is rejected, the existing call remains active in the hands-free mode.
