COMAND, general
The COMAND controller unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle.
With the COMAND controller unit with code (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation) the DVD drive is designed as a changer and can accommodate up to six CDs or DVDs.
The COMAND controller unit communicates over the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) with the following control units:
- TV combination tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit (N41/3) (up to 31.5.09 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]))
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- SDAR control unit (N87/5) (up to 31.5.09 with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio)
- High definition tuner (N87/8) (as of 1.6.09 with code (517) HD radio)
- Audio tuner control unit (N93/1)
- UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1) (up to 31.5.09 with code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Cell phone", UPCI [UHI] system or code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/Canada)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (as of 1.6.09 with code (518) Media interface)
The COMAND controller unit communicates with the following control units via the telematics CAN (CAN A):
- Model 221 with code (864) Rear entertainment system:
- DVD player (A40/4)
- Left rear display (A40/5)
- Right rear display (A40/6)
- RCP [HBF] control unit (N72/2)
- COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW)
- Front central operating unit (A40/9)
- SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW)
- TV combination tuner (analog/digital) (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner)
The COMAND controller unit acts here as a gateway. It routes the signals from the central CAN (CAN F) to the telematics CAN and MOST components and thus forms the communications interface.

The displays and menu presentations for the COMAND display or the SPLITVIEW display are generated in the COMAND controller unit. The applications below are also displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) at the same time:

- Cellular telephone
- Navigation
