Component Identification:

Gear indicator in instrument cluster in Sport transmission mode "S" and Comfort transmission mode "C"
It indicates to the driver the currently engaged gear "1", "2", "3", "4", "S' and "6" or selector lever position "D", "R", "N" and "P".

Gear indicator in instrument cluster in manual transmission mode "M" (except code (494) USA version)
It indicates to the driver the engaged gear "1", "2", "3", "4", "S', "6" and "T' or selector lever position "R", "N" and "P".

Transmission mode display in instrument cluster
It shows the driver the program selection Sport "S", Comfort "C" or Manual "M" selected with the automatic-transmission transmission mode button (S16/12) (except code (494) USA version).

The data are transmitted via the drive train CAN (CAN C) from the fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4) and from the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) to the CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) or ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine) and from there via chassis CAN (CAN E) to the IC.

6 different functions can be selected via the selector lever and 3 different transmission modes can be selected at the transmission mode button for automatic transmission.

Selector lever positions
"P" Park lock and start position
"R" Reverse gear
"N" Neutral and start position (no power transmission)
"D" All 7 forward gears are available

Upshifting and downshifting
Upshifting and downshifting takes place via the upshift steering wheel gearshift button (S111/1) and downshift steering wheel gearshift button (S110/1) or via the selector lever.

Upshifting and downshifting by the selector lever takes place via the following options:
^ Touch "+", upshift by one gear at a time. The shift range is expanded simultaneously in transmission modes "C" and "S" (press and hold, direct change into gear range "D").
^ Touch "-", downshift by one gear at a time. The shift range is limited simultaneously in transmission modes "C" and "S" (press and hold, a change to a shift range is made from which the vehicle can be favorably accelerated or decelerated).

With a limited shift range upshifts take place close to the maximum engine speed limitation.

Automatic-transmission transmission mode button
The following transmission modes can be selected:
^ Transmission mode Comfort "C" (start off in 2nd gear except in 1st gear shift range, the gear changes take place at lower engine speed)
^ Transmission mode Sport "S" (start off in 1st gear for all driving situations)
^ Transmission mode Manual "M" (except code (494) USA version) (direct gear selection by means of selector lever or downshift steering wheel gearshift button and upshift steering wheel gearshift button)

With kick down the upshifts and downshifts take place as in transmission mode "S".

Component Identification:

A sporty suspension tuning and transmission mode "S" or a comfortable suspension tuning and transmission mode "C" are selected with the vehicle dynamics button.
