Grounding
1 Connect locking rings for a brief period (conductive) with the vehicle body or ground.
Grounding the components prevents any electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD causes escaping fuel/air mixtures to explode.
View of locking rings, refer to operation step 5.
Open locking ring
2 Unlock fuel pump harness electrical connector (X36/3) and fuel tank electrical connector (X25/4), detach and set aside.
3 Vehicles with gasoline engine except engine 156:
Release and detach electrical connector from fuel pressure sensor (B4/7) and then set aside.
4 Unlock fuel line (2), detach and set aside.
The fuel line (2) should not be kinked or disconnected to avoid damage.
Collect feathering out fuel with absorbent rag.
Vehicles with diesel engine: there are two fuel lines (2) present.
5 Insert claw wrench (010) in the openings (3a) on the outside on the locking ring (3).
6 Insert long locking handle (011) into claw wrench (010) and turn locking ring (3) counterclockwise.
A high degree of force is necessary; the cap (3) clicks into place abruptly. Do not insert an extension between the locking handle (011) and the claw wrench (010).
7 Remove locking handle (011) with claw wrench (010) and locking ring (3).
Close locking ring
8 Clean contact surface of sealing ring (5) on fuel tank and locking ring (3).
Do not bring any dirt into the fuel tank in order to avoid damage and malfunctions.
9 Replace sealing ring (5) and lay in groove on fuel tank.
10 Hold by the locking ring (3) and insert locating cover (4a) or fuel filter (4b) through the opening on the fuel tank in such a way that the recess (4c) points in the direction of travel.
In order to avoid leaks, do not press sealing ring (5) out of the groove on the fuel tank in the process.
Handle left or right fuel level indicator sensor carefully to avoid deformation of the float linkage.
11 Press locating cover (4a) or fuel filter (4b) on its seat in the fuel tank and lay locking ring (3) in place.
12 Turn locking ring (3) clockwise until the catch tab (3r) lies on the left on the fastening claws (3k).
13 Carefully insert claw wrench (010) with locking handle (011) into the openings (3a) on the outside on the locking ring (3).
14 Turn locking ring (3) clockwise until the catch tab (3r) lies on the left on the recesses in the fastening claw (3k).
A high force is required. Do not insert an extension between the locking handle (011) and the claw wrench (010).
15 Turn locking ring (3) clockwise until the catch tabs (3r) between the recesses on the fastening claws (3k) engage.
A high force is required. The locking ring (3) engages abruptly.
16 Check for correct engagement of the locking ring (3).
An incorrectly engaged locking ring (3) can come loose which can lead to leaks on the fuel tank and injury to persons or damage to equipment and the environment.
17 Remove claw wrench (010) and locking handle (011).
18 Connect electrical connectors.
