Route guidance by means of voice output, general
The route guidance through voice output function is a comfort function that assists the driver during a journey without diverting his/her attention from the traffic.
The destination-oriented navigation of the navigation system is primarily supported by voice outputs with the following information:
- Route summary (following route calculation, a route summary is issued)
- Warning at highway approach roads
- Turnoff recommendations
- Junction names
- Corners
- Railroad overpasses
The voice output from the navigation system can take place in Japanese or English.
The following messages can also be issued by means of voice output during route guidance:
- Upon reaching destination:
- "Destination reached", "Intermediate destination reached" or "Stopover reached"
- If route has been changed by dynamic destination-oriented navigation system:
- "Route changed as a result of traffic announcements"
- At beginning of route calculation:
- "Start of route calculation"
In the following instances a special instruction is issued during voice output:
- Destination lies in area where driving is only possible to a limited extent
- Route via ferry
- Route via toll road
Function sequence for route guidance through voice outputs
The voice data is originally stored on the navigation DVD as individual word segments. This data record is automatically transferred to the navigation processor of the COMAND controller unit during initial start-up or during a system update from the DVD, from where it is stored on the hard disk.
In vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the voice output for destination-oriented navigation is output via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST), the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) and direct lines via the following speakers:
- Left door tweeter (H4/1h1)
- Left door bass speaker (H4/1h2)
- Right door tweeter (H4/2h1)
- Right door bass speaker (H4/2h2)
- Center dashboard speaker (H4/27)
For vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the voice output is sent by the COMAND controller unit directly to the following speakers:
- Left door tweeter
- Left door bass speaker
- Right door tweeter
- Right door bass speaker
When voice output is active the announcement volume can be adjusted using the following components:
- The volume controller on the COMAND controller unit
- The "+" and "-" button for setting specific functions and volume control (S111s1) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
